Hi
I have painted the underside shell of my mini, which is undergoing restoration. I first use etch primer on the bare steel, then cellulose primer, and lastly, cellulose top coat. I have applied U-POL gravitex stoneship only to the sills, rear arches, front areas (inner wings, wings, inside front panel etc.)

I have not used stonechip on the main floors, or boot floor. If I use waxoil over the cellulose paint over those areas, should this give enough protection from the elements? is there anything else i should do?

Thanks

dont use the waxoil untill you have painted the outside of the body, if it goes on the primer and you dont get it off the top coats of colour could react.

prime and paint first! i use waxoyl for the arches and all the nooks (using a shultz gun) then i use hammerite underseal (with waxoyl) for the underside. works really well!

Hi, so the first bit where you use waxoyl for the arches, and nooks and crannies. would that be the clear waxoyl? And the underseal, I take it by underseal you just mean the main floors (not the boot floor, toeboard, inner wings) is that right?

Cheers

em i use black waxoyl, but i have a black car, so it doesnt show. i have heard some people dont like clear waxoyl, its up to you what you use! i painted my boot floor, the rear wings and bits of the inner floor with underseal. the stuff use applies like waxoyl, but is more durable. if your inner metal work is in good nick, and has been treated with rust, then just having paint is best.

my mini restoration manual has a big section on keeping the mini rust free, and they recommend using clear waxoyl (well an alternative product) in all the internal nooks and crannies, behind all the interior cards... everywhere.

its up to you

(i get the feeling someone will shout at me for some of that, but thats how i do it!)

What about using clear, waxoyl underneatth? At the moment, the car is like this:
The sills, arches, inside front wings have been given stonechip (but not the floors or boot floor). The complete underside now has its colour coats (cellulose). Should I use clear waxoyl only , for the whole underisde, or is that a bad idea for the floors. I just want to keep the floors looking like body colour, not coated in a messy black underseal if i can avoid it..

Cheers

I use clear Waxoyl underneath my Mini, also inside all box sections, (dont forget the ones at the bottom of the screen pillars) & my shell is 28 years old & has original sills, floors etc it's only had 1 O/S front wing & A-panel & a rear frame. It's used daily in all weathers!

You've done the right thing so far John.

Get all your painting finished and buffed up and only when your 100% happy, crack the clear waxoyl out and go mad... you cant use too much of this stuff within reason. Dont bother with the black or shultz as it sounds like the bottom of your mini needs to be shown off, not covered up.

Just dont even look at a tin of waxoyl till all your painting is done and your happy.

Hi mate
Well, the underside is now prestine, fresh celly paint, stoneship where i have mentioned. the car will predomininelty be for summer use, as a show car, and will always be garaged when not in use. i dont like the idea of putting any black stuff on the underside.

How effective at protecting is the clear waxoyl on the underside? I have attached a picture of the underside.

Cheers

In the September issue of minimag they tested rust products (using metal, water and salt) and waxoyl came out on top:

"waxoyl has been a firm favourite for many private and commercial car restorers for a long time, and for one very good reason - it works. For starters it has good capillary action, so it can find its way into nooks and crannies easily. It's also relatively easy to apply, and with a bit of flexible hose you can squirt it almost anywhere. Also, it does not dry hard; it remains in a more or less waxy form. This has the benefit of not puncturing and allowing moisture to sit behind it and cause rot if it is hit by some foreign object, like a stone. There's also the fact that it is very affordable"

So the the whole car (including the underside) ought to be pretty well protected by it particularly as though it sounds like you've done your prep.

I hope that helps

I am afraid, with such a clean and impeccable underside, that you may be rather disappointed when the so-called clear Waxoyl goes on as it's actually a creamy colour, it then collects dirt and eventually dries to a muddy blackish colour, but it IS very good protection.

I would look at dinitrol products, they are used by the military to prevent corrosion. Waxoyl is made to a price.
