What would this acctually do?
Would it give it any increase of performance or just make you look like a boy racer with a noisy car??
Of course the MOT wont like it but that has just been done, so it would be put back on for the next!

I removed mine but at the same time as fitting a maniflow system so not sure taking the cat off with still having the original system would make any difference or make it louder.

Mine still passed the emissions test on mot without it :)

Cool... The OP doesn't specify his (although it's in this section of course..) :)

I've got a Rover fitted cat on my 1993 1275 carb mini.
It's coming off IN ORDER to pass the MOT next year.
The guy reconed that a carb + cat = an impossibility to pass in his opinion.
He said get rid of it and as a carb mini the test will be sans cat and an easy pass on emmissions for my car.

Does a cat *have* to be present for the MOT after a certain production year or is the decision based on the age of the engine?

I think it's more about the type of engine. If it's a 'modern' injection-style engine, you've got a different issue from a carbed engine.

I was hearing an opinion on the weekend that injection cars need the cats for emissions targets and MOT checks may be stricter, but Cats and chokes on the carb cars are mutually incompatible emissions wise (an oxymoron if you will ) .. this may be what your mini mate was referring to Daemonchild..

As the act of removing cats in some situations, I feel, could be a possible problem, I'd like to hear other opinons on that?

(gawd I just love the word oxymoron but lets stick to topic..)

Do a search, its been discussed loads.

Here is the short short version. Removing the cat from an injection car will fail the correct emissions test for the engine. It will not fail because the cat is not pressent, but a cat that is not pressent will cause an MOT test fail on emissions :(

Removing the cat will make the exhaust louder and you will gain perhaps 1 or 2 hp, wich wont be discernible
