Use a socket, not an adjustable spanner.

Nope it's a 15/16"

Don't use metric sockets on imperial bolts.

Absolutely right, especially with the smaller sizes.
To work on any Mini you do need an AF socket and spanner set.

The original sump plugs were 15/16" but many of the replacements, whether bodge job taper ones or better 'extended' ones are a different size. Find someone with a 1/2" drive socket set you could borrow and work through the Imperial sockets in there until you find one that is a good fit.

15/16" x 25.4 = 23.8mm, ie 24 is the closest metric, however as stated, get a 15/16" imperial.
