Ive looked into it, but needed a break from all the info available (made me go mad!) so thought id ask on here. Basically looked into MS, but can't work out (YET) how to control ignition on a C20XE Vaux lump. I've read you can use the Ford EDIS system (which is handy as i already have MJ), but i dont really want to add another sensor and a trigger wheel on the crank. Now, i have one of the later XE's that use the 2.8 Motronic system (distributorless), with a crank sensor and a cam sensor (which i *think* both are VR, but thats just a wild guess - not done my research) . So is there any way i can control ignition, either by using the standard sensors (or modifying?)? Or do i have to admit defeat and add a horrible trigger wheel on the end of the crank?

Cheers guys >_<

the XE has a 60-2 trigger wheel on the crank in the sump, on the front of the engine below the thermostat there is a VR sensor, this can be used to run a megasquirt.

you can add a second ignition driver chip to the megasquirt easily, and then drive a ford (or similar) coil pack directly from the squirt.

you can use the existing vaux coolant sensor too, and probably the throttle positoion sensor. MAP signal is easily sourced from the manifold,

Thats awesome!!! Cheers mate >_< I didnt know about the Wasted Spark mod, to drive a coilpack directly. Thats brill, just what i wanted to hear really

Nice one, cheers!!!

no probs,

If you get stuck drop me a PM, i'm running megasquirt on my injected 7 port turbo, I'm no guru, but should be able to point you in the right direction.

also, I have to say for the extra little bit of effort its worth going injection too.

Yeah, i plan to use R1 TB's, but figured out how that part works, with all the various sensors/senders. Was just the ignition bit that had me baffled for a second, but makes MUCH more sense now. Still a load more reading to do though >_<

I thought the XE was still 36-1

There are two sensor types used in the XE engines depending on the ECU. You have to be careful as the sensors are almost identical to look at with the only external difference being the gender key of the connectors.

And if you are going for a complete megasquirt system, get the right bits and bin the EDIS >_<

Pretty sure its 60-2 from what I've read. Sprocket - are you on about the Hall/VR sensors? As i think I've seen the difference posted on some site somewhere ( Too much info to take in in one go!!!!). At least i know i dont need the EDIS to control ignition. Thats all i wanted to find out before i started looking into it in more depth and find out i didn't do what i wanted it to. Seems to pretty much do EVERYTHING though >_<

I could well be wrong with the trigger pattern.

The sensors are indeed either Hell or VR. It is probibly easier to use the VR sensors, but the Hall sensors do not suffer with 'noise' both sensors will fit in the same hole.

Again, which sensor you use will depend on which bits you buy on the ECU. Same goes for the ignition.

Personaly I think you should look into VEMS, as that has Wideband lamda built in too

I was going to sugest VEMS too,

its sort of a megasuirt off shoot, but its less DIY, still good value.

Thats one of the things I've noticed to be honest - MS looks really DIY. Not that i mind that one bit - just looks a bit more, tacky (is that the word i mean? :proud:)
