Hi Folks, I’m having a little trouble with gear selection on my Mini which is fitted with the remote gear housing selector system. Mechanically a Circa 1968 to 71 Cooper S
I was having trouble getting reverse originally (I was pulling up on the lever instead of pushing down – which would appear to be wrong on this type – Doh! ).
Anyway, I ended up removing the 2 operating shaft levers, and subsequently with significant frustration, time and steep learning curve have managed to achieve 1st 3rd and 4th gears. Obviously this leaves 2nd and reverse which I just can’t select. I have had 2nd and reverse on a previous attempt, so I know they work Needless to say it is a real pain, and such a shame because I’m just not getting any use of the car.
This leads to the question… Has anyone got any advice on the right way (if there is one) to set up the operating shaft levers that would allow me to select all the gears and get using this crackinig little motor?
Any advice or general encouragement gratefully received!
Thanks, David

LOL Sorry but made me smile, had the same thing years ago with my first remote. You don't have to pull up or push down on the remote change, just over towards your legs and then back for reverse.

To get into reverse you just need to apply a little more pressure when going to the right into the reverse, it should go and then you can pull back into reverse

On the top of the differential housing there is a kind of knuckle joint, I assume that's what you've been working on, when in neutral, with the lever between 3rd & 4th, the joint should look straight, if it's a couple of splines out it can cause selection problems, also make sure the pinch bolts are clamped up tight.

Hi Sherlock, yes, that's the very bit's I'm working on. I'll do my best to get it as straight as poss. I'll have to wait for a few days till I get a chance to do the job.
Noted the comments on selecting reverse. Think that's where my problems started - suppose it'll be funny when it's fixed.
Thanks for your input!
