Right my misses has just bought a brand new Acer Aspire (model: '5335') Notebook Laptop which came with Windows Vista Basic and everything works fine and Windows Service Pack 2 has now been downloaded and installed too.

But the problem she has is whilst trying to watch a DVD using 'Windows Media Player', there is no sound and this error message pops up: -

Error:

Audio format is not supported by the current application. Please launch %s in MCE.

It will play a CD with sound no problem though and we're no experts and we haven't got a clue what it means or why the sound isn't working with DVD's. We've only just tried playing a DVD with it and so we don't know if it was working prior to Windows Service Pack 2 being installed.

We'd really appreciate it if anyone has any knowledge on how to correct this problem and can help us out.

Although having said that she can play DVD's via the 'Acer Arcade Deluxe' movie playback programme instead and that will play both the picture and sound. It's just Windows Media Player that's the problem.

;D

Hiya Mate, It just seems like a codec error with Windows media player. Just think of it as different Dvd's are written in different ways and a codec is like a pair of reading glasses if you like, if you cant find them you cant read ... like a codec.

Im sure she doesnt want alot of old rubbish on her PC but the best media player about that will read most formats is VLC media player. I think its somthing to do with the rights that doesnt allow microsoft to supply WMP with every codec so its alot easier and cheaper to download VLC than buying and installing the codec you need.

here is a link to VLC's download page ;D

Cheers Craig, I've also found this link with more information about the problem: -

The strange thing is though, my daughters Fujitsu Siemens Laptop also runs Vista Basic and there is sound and vision from DVD's played via Windows Media Player.
