I was at work yesterday and my Mini was parked outside, a customer came in and was telling me that his wife bought a Mini Advantage new back in 1987 and got a free tennis racket with it!

I'd never heard about this before and was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it? Would be good if I could get my mitts on one! ;D

yes its true the mini advantage did have a tennis racket. Mary Quant had i think a make up bag, and one limited edition had a mountain bike of all things! Ill ask my mate who was the manager of a Rover dealership in Droitwich, he knows all these daft little things.....

No, Bjorn Borgs last wimbledon win was 1980, 1987 would have been the likes of Stephan Edberg, Ivan Lendal, Martina Navratalova, Boris Becker, Stefi Graf

Pat cash won the mens at Wimbledon
Martina won the Ladies

I'm not sure about the Mini Advantage and there was no official sales brochure for it (which was strange). No it just appeared over a few pages in the standard Rover Cars brochure. But there was no mention of a tennis racket and it's possible that some Rover dealers issued the rackets themselves as some Rover dealers even created their own Mini special editions by adding a few unique stickers to a Mini City.

As for the Mini Designer LE (inspired by Mary Quant), well you had to send off a special leaflet to claim the make-up bag.

I actually bought a new Mini Mayfair at the time and the Rover dealer allowed both my mother and sister to send off for a make-up bag each.

Sadly they didn't hang on to them and when heavily used, the Mary Quant Designer print faded or just rubbed off. They were black and pvc and very nice. With hindsight I should have wrapped them in bubble wrap and then put them on e-Bay today. Ha

I could be wrong though because after giving it some thought, every 1989 Mini 30 LE sold came with a leather bound copy of the 'Mini After 30 Years' book and it also came in a nice collectable cardboard packaging with lots of different Mini images.

So there is a chance the Mini Advantage did come with a tennis racket, as I don't think the book was mentioned in the Mini 30 LE brochure? Or I could be wrong there as it's been a while since I checked mine.

It did come with a tennis racquet. It was a Dunlop McEnroe branded racquet. I bought one new (E723 MLS) and I think I still have the racquet (which has been used). Checked it - It is a Dunlop McEnroe X50 Vibrotech
