I own a 99 MPI and i just bought a sat/nav stereo hu that needs to be connected to the speedometer to work properly (It makes the sat nav more accurate and it also turns the volume up if you're moving faster to compensate for the noise). In the fitting manual it states that some old cars (pre 80's but it is a Rover right) might need a speed pulse adapter as the hu will not recognise the signal. Does anyone know out there? (Sorry if someone has already answered this i did look at a lot of threads first)

I'm also looking for someone professional that can fit it relatively cheaply in the London area and some advice on speakers. The hu has 4x18 RMS so i will just have some speakers on the back shelf and a couple in 5.1/4" pods on the doors. I value space too much to get a sub etc so i need a set that will handle as much low end as possible for a reasonable price. I was thinking of something like Planet Audio BB65PRO or Alphasonic PCZ 65 components cause they have a decent frequency response and power handling and maybe some similar priced coaxial set for the doors.
Thanks :D

Mini speedos are mechanical so you'd need some sort of transducer. They do exist for the Mini gearbox or you might manage with sensor off an Acewell Speedo or similar.

Thanks does anyone have any idea where i can find one relatively cheaply? The company selling the hu use to sell one but i can't find it anywhere and because the mini gear box is not exactly similar to most cars even if i did it might not fit it so one that fits to a Mini gear box would be ace.

The problem is that the transducer replaces the speedo cable entirely because it's designed to run a digital speedo. You can't run both so you can either have a speedo or send signals to your stereo. I don't know of a transducer that works as a tap off the cable, except those for rally trip meters but I doubt they'll be any use. I do have to wonder why the stereo needs to be connected to the speedo if it has a GPS in it. It should know roughly what speed it's moving at anyway. Are you sure it doesn't want a tacho signal?

I think there was a thread with a "pass through" transducer. It might have been specially built by speedy cables?

It was Sailes Marketing.

See this web site and contact them:
http://sailesmarketi...sal-transducer/

You will need to buy a new speedometer cable and have this transducer mounted somewhere in its length. That will give you both a working mechanical speedo and a pulse train for your electronics.

Sorry I am a little bit confused I understand so little about all this. I think a tacho signal would be sufficient do i need to get the transducer or not (I'm referring to the following thread)? By the way by connecting the sat nav to the speedo (You also meant to connect it to the reversing light) it becomes much more accurate as it takes your position in intervals therefore without it assumes you still have your last speed (it has happened to me before with my old portable one where i stopped at the lights and it thought i was wizzing past advising me to turn -as i was meant to turn right after the light- causing me to go the wrong way). The feature is particularly useful in tunnels (Also as the windshield in Mini's is rather vertical it has a much more limited view of the satelites). Another reason is that without connecting you can't use the 20-step SDV (Speed Dependent Volume control) that turns the volume up the faster you go. It is a silly feature I guess but it would make the police laugh when you tell them why you were speeding lol!
Thank you for your help.

If it wants a speedo signal then you will need the transducer.

It might be easier if your MPI is one with a 2 part speedo cable.

Thanks so much I'm getting somewhere now. I emailed Acewell they said they might be able to help i emailed them the vin and they will get back to me, but even more promising I spoke to a guy at Sails Marketing who explained that if the speedo is mechanical they do a transducer that clips on the back of the speedo and they are relatively cheap (he said the universal one means that i would have to cut the cable). Problem is there are many different kinds. He thought it was probably part no 67H but he said I'd have to look at the part diagram on the web site see if it is the right one as there are 3 clip-ons and some srew ons as well. As you have probably guessed by now me opening up the speedo to have a look or even figuring it out if I did is unlikely. Has anyone got an idea which one fits the MPI. Thanks again for your time.

Acewell make electronic dashes, principally for bikes, you might be able to rig up one of their sensors on a driveshaft with a diy bracket.

You might struggle finding enough space behind the speedo for an adapter but you won't need to dismantle the clocks, the cables just pushes on the back. Minispares have some piccies on their site.

I called the company I bought the hu from and they suggested sails marketing too. Apparently they have the part but no one seems to be certain which one it is though. Anyone out there know for sure by any chance?

Can anyone tell me for sure which one (if any) of these transducers will fit at the back of an MPI speedo?

http://sailesmarketi...rs/transducers/

They think it's probably 67h
