Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
hi people. a friend of mine has a clubby estate to nwhich he has fitted a 1275 metro auto. can the original wiring loom be connected straight to the new type starter by extending them or should it have a relay. also am i right in thinking it needs a white/yellow from coil +ive. if so which terminal does it go on. large or small spade.

Any non-standard parts that might be involved with the problem?

Its ok. went to look at it and sorted it. just needed white/yellow wire fitting from coil to small terminal and , red/white ignition wire to large terminal.

You need to use the cars original solenoid. On my car I put the two main power feeds (BIG cable) onto the same terminal but used the rest as a sort of relay - to trigger the starters own solenoid. Check a wiring diagram for late vehicles, you'll be able to work it out.

As regards the ignition wiring - well that seems to be a ballast question. I would maybe consider using the older system, but remember to use a non- ballast coil if you do so!

Can we assume it's an auto to auto swap?

You won't need the yellow/white unless it (the car) has ballasted ignition. If it did the wire would already be there. You can still use the new dizzy but use the old coil.

As far as the solenoid goes, the easiest solution is to retain the old, body mounted, solenoid swapping the starter cable on to the same post as the battery cable and running a wire from the, now vacant, starter terminal to the operating spade terminal on the new, pre engaged, starter. All the other wires can stay in place on the original solenoid.

If you decide to get rid of the old solenoid and just use the pre engaged starter's then a relay to protect the starter terminal of the ignition switch would be a good idea.

The starter solenoid on the inner wing is simply the same as the starter solenoid on the new starter motor, the only real difference is that on the earlier type the joining wire has to be longer to go from the wing to the starter instead of the short path it now has to take on the combined starter motor and solenoid item :D

Also if you are changing from manual to auto then you WILL need to cut the ignition feed and take it to the inhibitor switch mounted on the valve body cover at the front
