Hi,

I recently changed my oil from halfords 15w-40 to Castrol Classic XL 20W-50 which i find much better, the thing is there isnt quite enough oil in the engine for my liking. Its just below half way between max and min.
Is there anywhere i can get 1 or 2litres rather than buying another full gallon?
Ive had a good look and can only find the gallon.

Alternativly if they dont sell it in 1 or 2 litre containers, what other oil can i mix in with it that i can get in a smaller conatainer?

Thanks

Chris

Just remember its only 1/2 litre between min and max, so don't put too much in.

I dont need a gallon, it doesnt leak that much...

I know its only 1/2 a litre, i made that mistake when i put the halford 5litres in, and over filled it :w00t:

Any idea's as to what i could use or is it a bad idea to mix oils?

Well I have to admit that I always bought 2 cans of Duckhams Q Classic 20W/50 as one can wasn't quite enough and then I'd also have another (which I've still got after some 2 years) for top ups and for future oil changing.

But now Duckhams Q is no more, I may try the Halfords Classic oil which comes in a 5 litre can. Or perhaps this fancy stuff instead: -

Oh and as for your question, well I'd have thought 2 similar mineral multigrade oils would be okay to mix. Just don't use synthetic or semi-synthetic oil?

You'll like Penrite Taffy, it's green.

Castrol Classic currently only comes in gallon cans. If the dipstick is above minimum with the car on level ground there's enough in there, anywhere between min and max is right.

As above if you're going to mix it go for the same type of oil and preferably the same grade but I think you'll be out of luck. Halfords Classic, Comma Classic and most others also only come in either gallon or 5 litre cans. Penrite 20w50 comes in 5L, 20L or 205L cans. I think Millers Mini 20w50 is sold in 1 litre bottles.

It can not be as bad as my dads old honda! >_< that needed almost a litre per tank of fuel

Ok i guess i will just buy another can of castrol, its good stuff so i dont mind.

the thing is, a gallon is 4.54 litres, and the mini takes 4.8? or am i wrong? Which i didnt realise when i orderd it.

Yes an oil change on a manual (inc Filter change) is 4.8l. Though I'd imagine you'll use ever so slightly less as some old oil is still bound to be in the block and sump when you top back up. But assume 4.8l required.

edit: just thinking out loud here, and not suggesting this as solid advice, but if you top up with 4.54l, that leaves you 0.26l short. The difference between min and max is 0.5l so in theory you'd fill to halfway between the min and max marks (assuming you don't spill/waste any new oil). AFAIK having the oil halfway between min and max is not a bad or dangerous thing.
