Well, moms mini was playing up so, we phoned the garage, he turns up and says the oil pump so

We brought a oil pump from Guessworks for £50, and sent it off to be fixed, after being at the garage for 13 weeks we got it back today and heres the bill
Towing in £35
Labour to remove, refit engine auto-gearbox to oil pump £250
Engine oil £18
forward clutch drive plate £150
MOT £47

and then the failure off the mot is three pages

Measurements
Brakes Failures: RBT Park Brake Efficiency 15%
Reasons for refusal of a test certificate

001 Offside (floor plus floor to outersill) subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
002 Nearside front (floor to outersill) subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
003 Direction indicators flashing less then 60 times per minute
004 Rear rear fog lamp not in good working order (not working) ( yes it says rear twice on the sheet),
005 Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid
006 horn does not function,
007 Nearside front position lamp not in good working order (not working)
008 offside front position lamps not in good working order (function impaired)
009 nearside (outersill all along) subfram mounting prescribed area is extensively corroded
010 Front (valence corroded by bth pear shaped mounting) subframe mounting is excessively corroded.
011 Offside front front suspension has excessive play in upper suspension ball joint, (yes front is on there twice)
012 offside front lower front suspension has excessive play in a lower suspension ball joint
013 nearside front (under radiator) brakes pipe excessively corroded
014 nearside front brake pads less then 1.5mm thick
015 offside front brake pads less then 1.5mm thick

017 offside front track rod end ball joint has excessive play
018 offside rear parking brake recording little or no effort (shouldn't that be effect)
019 offside rear subframe mounting prescribed area is excessively corroded
020 parking brake efficiency below requirements

Thats alot for £47
also the subframe and brake lines were all new last year

So what you all think

thats quite a list. on it it doesnt actually say that the subframe has failed. it says the subframe mounting area of the bodywork isnt good. im not too sure about the indicators not flashing 60 times though.

i do have one question though.. why did you attempt an mot without checking the lights worked first?

003 Direction indicators flashing less then 60 times per minute
005 Windscreen washer provides insufficient washer liquid

Those two points are pure MOT poetry..

By the way everything is easy fixable, seen some worse mot reports..

I had an MOT tester tell me my indicators were not orange enough, they must have a special orange meter
Although the ones on the Volvo were less orange and they passed!

Why? They are both things that are included on the MOT because they are both legal requirements. Indicators have to flash between 60 and 120 times per minute and the windscreen washer has to provide enough fluid to wash the screen. There's nothing odd in this MOT report at all, the car is badly corroded.

parking brake recording little or no effort (shouldn't that be effect)

No, it shouldn't!

Fitting a new fuse box should help here, as the rear contacts corrode and create a short circuit which has a detrimental effect on the indicator flasher unit.

Either way my indicators (and horn) certainly came back to life big time after fitting a brand new fuse box. I even coated the rear contacts in Vaseline so they shouldn't rust out any time soon (okay the original had been on there for over 15 years, so I can't really complain).

Oh and I recently had to fork out 170 quid on welding to get mine through it's MOT.

Tell me more shifty, and the reason i send it for a MOT was the fact it had been at the garage for 12 weeks and 5 days so we didnt even see it before.

ive had the "not flashing 60 times a min " and "not orange enough" took mini home and counted 98 times per min so i left it took it back for the retest told them it was sorted (new flasher and bulbs), they checked and passed it. i think they where just looking for faults that didn't exist in the hope i'd get them to fix it

same garage a year later tried to fail it on the servo not working, i then had to explain how it didn't have one ;)

mot is not as simple as people think, trust me im a tester.

where you list the faults and comment on (ie front) down twice, thats how the items are on the mot sytem, there are drop down boxs under the headings which various things can be selected, ie front, rear, centre, n/s, o/s and many more

the subframe mentions prescribed area, which will be an area within 30cm of the selected area, not the subframe which is corroded

brake pipes are hard to judge on an mot, it new thought the pipes wouldnt have deteriorated within 12 months

im not saying he failed the car fairly, or unfairly as i havent seen it but with some of the cars ive seen and failed, the response from the customer is amazing when they think the car is mint but everything is falling off and nothing works, its a shock when they get given the failure sheet

Without seeing the car its a bit tricky, can you get some pics up of the areas?

Also, depends on what you want, a quick MOT patch up(oversills/patched up etc) or a everything removed and done properly.

I can also collect and deliver.

Drop me a PM

Just sounds to me like this car has been poorly maintained.. pretty much everything on there is down to poor maintenance. If you keep track of things and fix them when you first know there there then they can't develop into more serious things.

Either way depending how bad the corrosion is, everything else could be sorted in a weekend easily.
