Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. For a while now I have been wondering why my indicators, or to be more precise the flasher unit, doesn't "tick" like most cars. I swear other mini's I've driven have done so.. I have had two different flashers, both the same. I think I have the m3 onwards type. I have mk2 rear lights, no side indicators, and little clear morris minor sidelights with orange bulbs as indicators.. Not the ideal setup I know.. Any help would be great :- Oh and the car's an "89 mayfair originally.

is it that you do not hear the flasher unit? or the bulbs are not flashing?

it could be that you are installing a flasher unit for side indicators (if the bulbs are not flashing)

It's made up of a bimetallic strip inside that makes and breaks the connection which in turn makes the indicators flash (usually makes a sort of quiet boink noise :teehee: ), modern ones use an electronic relay which clicks loudly as the terminals are pushed back and forth inside the flasher relay with an electromagnet

I think i've taken too many things apart over the years :-

Maybe it's different makes of flasher unit. My Mini ticks a lot louder than my gf's Mini.

How's your flasher unit mounted? Maybe fitting it to a bracket screwed to the bulkhead will 'amplify' it?

The main ticking noise comes from it bieng mounted on the bulkhead metal to metal I believe.

Ah.. I have a non genuine one, you can't get the geuine old type that mounted to a bracket any more. It makes no noise whatsoever, and during the day I often leave them on by accident because I can't see them due to my steering wheel/seat position. I'll try the non side indicator type one, and mount it somehow, I'm thinking a massive home made P clip!!

Find one in a breakers from a modern car with three terminals add an extra earth wire to it and you'll have loud clicks, also flashers that work at a constant rate too rather than the often haphazard old style ones.

EDIT
terminal wiring for modern flashers

#49 is the 12V power. (ignition feed)
#31 is a Ground.
#49a goes to the signal switch. (to indicator switch)

Brilliant! May seem like a stupid question, but how do I determine which is the flasher unit? I know of a Renault clio and a BMW 318 I can maybe "borrow" one from.

It's usually got flasher or 21w +21w or something similar, like this one on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.co.u...=item3eecb4bdbf

Sometimes they're a little bit taller than this one too

If it has 4x21w on it somewhere then it could also be used in the same way to replace the hazard flasher unit, done all my minis like this.
