ok this is unusual i believe,a friend of mine has a weird mini that is built from bits all different ages and he has a problem with excessively tight threads on the flywheel bolt.we dont want to total the crank,and are looking to run a tap through the threads.we believe its a verto flywheel but out of interest what size/pitch are verto/pre-verto flywheel bolts?? any help would be great.ta enigma.

Thread is 5/8 x 16 TPi WF. I get my taps from Tracy Tools - 01803 326430, www.TracyTools.com. very helpful folks, damned good prices and excellent service. usually in stock.

As above it's 5/8" / 16 Whitworth which is a non-standard threadform and have to be custom made, although some places have stock of them. You won't be able to get one just anywhere so try the places listed above. I got mine from Guessworks.

How did the threads get into a mess ? Is it just remains of Loctite in the threads ? You could use an old bolt and cut a slot along the threads on one side - and use that to 'clean' the threads.
