the only differences are the types that are common between A+ and Pre A+ manuals...... ie. Pre A+ manual and auto are the same ...... A+ auto and manual are the same

The change of starter motors wasn't concurrent with the change from A series to A+ engines. It was in 1985, Minis made before that use an innertia starter and Minis made after use a pre-engaged. There is no difference bewteen auto and manual starters of the same type though as Martin says.

so the 1993 auto starter will fit the 1275 metro engine im fitting in my mini

That's correct, 85 was a change point.... I guess what I should have said....... is if the starter ring gear on your flywheel is the same as that on your convertor then it will work ok together 
Rule of thumb count the teeth,
129 = Verto or pre-engaged type
108 = Non verto or inertia engagement, however I have seen some pre-engaged starter motors that fit the pre-verto, they are about the same size as an inertia type and very rare
