Rover Cooper S Works
2000 (X)
For the past year or so my car has not run right. It is normally okay until it has been running for 5 - 10 minutes but after then it looses power and 'strums' also and backfires. You put your foot down and it will not pull away like it is flat but if you very slowly put your foot on the accelarator it will very slowly pull away with hardly any strumming. We have replaced plugs and leads, cleaned the cam sensor and checked the fuel filter. Had an engine rebuild 5,000 miles ago.

The other day it was getting really bad with the strumming and would not pull away at all. When we accellarated to try and get it moving it gave up the ghost. It did not die, just no power and was making a very odd noise. Think it may be electric related as it really smelt of burning when this happened. Pulled over, and would not start again. It sparks and the fuel injection is okay. Been told it maybe electics in general or possible ECU?

Please could someone help me!!

check the inlet manifold doesnt have a leak, for example check the gasket is good or that the brake servo hose is all sealed? Sometimes you get these symptoms (on a carbed model anyway) when an air leak makes the mixture too lean as it gets into the engine. Maybe try spraying some WD40 near the joint of the manifold to the head while the engine is running? Sometimes the engine draws this in through any gaps and the revs pick up, showing you there is a gap in the gasket!

What makes you think this is an electrical problem? Sounds to me like a problem with one of the systems that comes into use as the car warms up. Is there a leak in any of the charcoal cannister hoses? Since this is an injection car why have you not had the fault codes examined? Why have you put up with this for a year? Seems odd to me, it's probably an easy fix.

Moved to injection section.
