Hi all, thought it best to start a new topic as this is a different problem to the non starting problem. well . . . it starts, it runs ok for about 30 secs to a minute, then it loses revs very fast and cuts out, resulting in smoke (light grey) coming from the engine, specifically the manifold I think (smoke is dying away by the time I get out to have a look) Smells like burning oil. I didn't even think I had it running long enough for it to overheat, wasn't moving, just sat on my drive ticking over for all of about 30 seconds. What's up with it now? So annoyed, I had it running perfectly before I messed around with this bloody stage 1 kit!

Oil level - just about on Minimum
Water/coolant - slightly low - nothing too cause this to happen im sure.

Anyway, all advice will be greatly appreciated. I have a friend over tomorrow to help so should be able give a better idea of where the smoke is coming from.

It's a 1985 mayfair (mk1 look-a-likey) with a 1275 metro engine.

Might be the carb flooding. check for signs of petrol coming out the overflow.

Did you overfill your carb dashpot?
I did that the first time. The smoke was white as I used 3-in-1... (now using 20w50)
Just a curve-ball thought.

Cheers guy, will check that tomorrow. Also, can anyone point me in the direction of how to check the float in the carb. Haynes doesn't really do a great deal in explaining how to check.

One thing that has me stooped is i have fitted a stage one kit and large bore exhaust, so i would have assumed i'd be getting too much air through not the opposite???! Haven't touched the dashpot, infact i barely touched the carb when swapping the manifold and air filter. However it did lie on it's side for about a week (

Did you fit a new needle and adjust the mixture when the stage 1 was fitted?

Paul.

i had a problem with the smoke coming off under the bonnet and that wasjust the paint burning off the manifold, it wasnt long after i started it but let it run for a while and it cleared. Just make sure you know where is coming from

No I kept the original needle as I heard they never send the correct one with the kit?!? I just wanted it running to the point I can take it for a rolling road session with Southam guys and they fit correct needle and tune it. Not adjusted mixture at all yet. Does this sound like it's running too rich then?

Lol not that wide 3" playmini centre exit (straight through)

Make sure hose connections and manifold/filter connections to the carb have a good seal i.e. Crank case relief.
Also Vacuum Advance.. rubber seals can perish at either end. take it off at dizzy end and see if it makes a difference to the engine revs.
