morning (too early! :D )

just a quickie about box sections.

picking up my mini on saturday and want to make sure it lasts in its current condition: i wondered if anyone would be so kind as to list all the box sections i need to spray waxoyl in and how to reach them!

also, re: the floor, what do you guys do to that horrible sound proofing stuff that is stuck all over the floor? i cant see the condition of the actual pan without getting it up, but dont want to reck my car! also what do you put down again afterwards!

cheers, T

Starting at the front: The small box sections in the front panel where the subframe mounts are, accessed through the access hole in the front panel.
Bonnet stiffeners, particularly the front ends, accesses through various holes in them.
Scuttle corner box sections, access from engine compartment, there is a gap between scuttle & inner wing.
A-posts, access via hole where door check bracket operates.
Front sill sections, best to drill a hole in each section fore & aft of the jacking point & fit grommets afterwards.
Seat mounting box section, access through holes already there.
Doors, remove pockets, if fitted & release bottom of door card.
B-posts, there is a black plastic cover, facing the rear of the car which can be removed & you can spray into there.
Side-bins & rear sill sections, remove trim from sidebins & spray waxoyl liberally into the rear heelboard end & down the side panel, There is also a sill box section in there & with a waxoyl extension probe, you can get to that from the hole drilled in the sill section behind the jacking point.
Rear wheel arches, not exactly a box section but it's important to allow waxoyl to run all around the inside where the arch meets the side panel.
Inside boot, small box sections where rear bulkhead, boot floor & wheel arch all meet, access through holes already there.
Boxed ends of rear valance, if it's original & 1980-on you can access the right hand one through a hole in the corner of the boot floor where the rear fog light wires run. Left hand, remove grommet beneath bumper which covers the hole for a second rear fog mounting.
Stiffeners in bootlid, via gaps between stiffener & skin, put plenty at the bottom of this.
As regards the sound deadening material, I remove it with a sharp chisel, working along a line about an inch at a time, by tapping the chisel vertically down on to it, it just splits away with no damage. I removed some of mine, but the original black panel primer was still immaculate under it after 28 years. I replaced what I had removed with 2 coats of Hammerite.

There are also other places, although not box sections, that you should pay attention to. These are usually good mud and dirt traps and whould be cleaned regularly and treated with waxoil:

Wing and front panel seam below headlights
Top front edge of wing above headlights
A panel to flitch panel join
Wing to scuttel join
Rear scuttle to boot floor join
Rear subframe front mounting points

You're more than welcome, I was lucky, when I bought my current Mini, it was 5 years old & had been waxoyled from new, it's now 28 years old & I've repeated the treatment a few times & the structure is still original & sound. I've only replaced the rear frame & o/s front wing & A-panel. If you need any more help, please ask.

Hi Tom, I will get something together for you, if possible with a few photos, will take a day or two, though. Sorry for the delay, it's been too dark when I've been getting home, so I'll do it at the weekend.

in my opinion the best way of removing the soundproofing crap is with a heat-gun and scraper/chisel, then wipe it with petrol or thinners, carefully though, wear gloves as well...

Waxoyl this stuff really is horrible but works, trying to decide what to do with this regarding my project, was tempted to stone chip the underneath and waxoyl in my sills and subframe front box section also under scuttles. any opinions?
