Hello, I just purchased a Mk1 Mini, and plan to convert it to a vintage race car. I see Safety Devices has a cage for Minis, but I was planning to build one from scratch. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips for installation (from their own experience) of installing one, or if anyone had pictures of an installed cage that shows mounting points, that would be great too. Thanks! Jeff

Hi, I have installed a Safety Devices rear only cage with no diagonal to my road car. I done it when the interior was out, even the rear view mirror! From memory it literally just tips back and falls into place. Bit of a pain drilling the holes in the rear pockets if you want to keep them that is, I have seen them chopped out which makes life easier. I also had to convert to static seat belts as the inertia reel gets in the way when the cage is in. But if its a racer then I guess harnesses will be the order of the day anyway!

Let me know if you want up close pics of mounting points and I will take some when I get home tonight and email off.

Richard.

If you intend to create an actual race car, as in a car that you will race, you should know it's very unlikely that a home built roll cage will pass scrutineering in any race series. Also there is lots of information about the good and bad points of roll cages on the forum, have a search.

Actually, the SCCA defines clearly what the requirements are for a cage, and the minimum requirements for bar size and thickness / material. If you build a cage to SCCA specs, it is acceptable for most, if not all, vintage racing associations here in the states. I'm just stuggling with exactly where people have the mounting points, etc. Thanks!

front section, floor brace, dash brace

the cage is attached to the cage on the A,B and C pillers, incoperate a harness bar if your going through the trouble and you cant see it in those pics but a diagonal has been added (previous owner had stupidly cut it out)

This is mine.It mounts in the usual places on the front and rear floor but goes through the rear bulkhead to the arches, through the front and into the bulkhead, ties in on the a & b pillars as well as along the inner sills, cross member and onto the heel board. It also mounts onto strengthened areas on the toeboard.

I know i think until i get it painted then its always going to be Iains, when i write something on turbominis i find myself writing Iains old miglia instead of mine!

Love the cage but your right id guess it must be 50kg+ based on the custom cages miglia one being 46kg.

Cheers Ross.

Im not sure on the make of the pedal box,it was in the car when i bought it.The only thing i know is that it uses separate front and rear brake master cylinders as well as a third for the clutch. It uses girling master cylinders but apart from that i know very little.I will be taking it out next week so i can get some pics if you like?

Quite a few companies do similar things, kad do a bias box but it sits in the engine bay. There are plenty out there that mount up like mine, have a look for tilton, optimum balance etc and theres a few on ebay as well

Cheers Rosco.
