Help

My spot welder keeps blowing holes in everything I weld, even though it clean metal that im welding. Ive tried turning the setting down but then im getting really weak welds, if I turn it up slightly then all it does is blow holes

Any ideas what it could be?

its a combination of power and time, also the tips in line. also some pattern panels tend to spit due to the poorer quailty of the metal.

experiment with off cuts first

Ive been experimenting with off cuts and it all works fine, but then I go and use the spot welder on the car and before you know it the panel looks like it's been shot to hell and back!

Seriously considering selling my spot welder now!

are you welding a new panel to an existing panel on the car? if so there may lie your problem in im guessing its the old panel. and when you say weak weld what you classing as weak, how are you testing it? the way i was always told to test, is do a spot weld and then pull it apart and what should happen is the metal fails and leaves a hole in one of the pieces of metal.

if your selling it i may take it depending on price.

I had exactly the same problem and was also ready for selling mine but now think it's one of the best bit's of kit i've bought, i must of done over 100 practice welds with the same gauge steel and off cuts of the old panels etc and every one was perfect, when i came to weld on the car every weld blew out!
I tried every timer and tension setting going with no joy, even made sure both surfaces were perfectly smooth, clean etc etc still no joy. Have you set your tip gap up according to the book? If so then thats probably the problem, i found that if you have no gap, infact have your tips touching before the handle is fully down and wind your handle tension rite up so that you have LOADS of tension it should sort it, i have not had a single weld blow out since.

maybe try having a backing plate to take the heat away something like copper, just a thought,
