Model:Mini City
Year:1989
Description of problem: Me and my dad changed the drivers side wheel bearing and all ball joints on the weekend as there was a large amount of play on the wheel and a loud knocking noise, it all went well.
Driving to college today, i notice a new noise coming from the same place. Not so much a knocking noise, but a noise. It only happens while turning left.
Jacked the car up and the wheel doesnt run as freely as the passenger side. Could over tightning of the hub bolt, the one on the driveshaft, be the cause on the noise and also the stiffer wheel?
Id go and check now but my dads going to work now and he doesnt like me messing on my own because i tend to mess things up lol

Any help appreciated. :D

What was the torque you used to tighten the castle nut?
Were all parts free of wear (hub, drive flange and CV joint)?
Was there a resistance when you put the outer bearing races into the hub?

Two things are VERY important: no wear and torque setting!
Wrong torque setting and/or wear on other parts nd the bearings fail again in no time...

And don't listen to people telling you "just tighte them up as much as you can" - that's WRONG.

Hiya.
There wasnt any wear in the other parts or resistance when putting the outer bearings in.
Shall check how much the castle nut was tightened later when i get the chance, dont think it was tighten up fully but it was my dad that did it so i dont know for sure.

Thanks for the quick reply and help :D

Error found :( There should be quite a good amount of resistance when you knock(!!) the outer bearing races into the hub... :D If not, the races just spin and make it worse (worst case: wheel locks up and you spin right into the next tree!!)...

Get a new hub or a good(!) 2nd hand one. Also there should be no feelable scorings on the CV joint if you go over it with your fingernail. If there are; time for a new CV joint (90% of the cases I've seen the CV was past it's life...). same for the drive flange where it goes to the bearing.

And remeber: bearings are usualy a matched pair! Tappered roller bearings are sensible for tolerances so don't mix them up! And don't use the bearings again now, even if they are only a few miles old. It's just not worth it.

:D

I think i know what that might be!!!
I had this knoking noise when I went round a left hand corner, it could be the back plate? Mine was loose, so every time I went round a corner, the back plate moved and was bouncing against the disc . It's common that they wear away and then become very loose.
Hope this helps
Alex :(

Possible cv joint, sounds like a clicking noise when turning tightly one way.

Yeah, I thought that it might be that because when I turned quite tightly it got worse! It would be a good idea to check if they are ok, you can just check them by puttin a screw driver through the wheel and see if it moves! :D

Does sound like the wheel bearing. CV would be a clicking noise on tight turns. His description clearly suggest a 'noise' when the wheel('s bearing) is under load which indicates a failure there. :D

Well i had about three weeks of driving around with a loose back plate, sounded like i was dragging some empty cans around!
Got two second hand ones for a tenner at the Malvern show, coated them in black rust paint and worked a treat.

Im confussed now, when we put the bearings in, we did have to like tap them in like the manual suggests, but it wasnt like, loads of resistance.
Got to go on the bus tomorrow now while my dad looks at it tomorrow

First thing well try is tightening that nut up to the correct setting and seeing how that effects things. Was planning on doing both CV joints next year so might bring that job forward as well.

I hate all these essential jobs that need doing. Each one pushes getting some sort of audio equipment further away :D

Thanks for all your help again

Audio equipment? It's effing useless if the car falls to pieces.......... :D

First things first. Speakers are no life insurance - healthy suspesion components are.
Your car has 20 years of (ab)use on it's back. And that is with technology from the 1950's!
Don't expect it to be like a undestructible ricer-corolla-something modern plastic car.

Fancy speakers are the very least you and your car need right now. :D
So do it now! Fix it before if all falls apart... That's way cheaper!

There wasnt any [wear in the other parts or] resistance when putting the outer bearings in

Aha - so they didn't "fall" into the hub like your first awnser suggested...!? This sounds better  If you'r however able to turn the races by hand once fitted to the hub - replace the hub please! Also make sure you realy knock them down all the way!

See how helpfull the internet is in this case? There's no way describing how it must feel (Haynes can neither!)....
Any club / experienced hobby-MINI-mechanic near you?? He could help you MUCH better!!! :(

And if I was you - I'd buy a new set of bearings if they made noises...
(Yes, I replaced a set of 10 miles old bearings after I made a mistake installing them - it's just not worth it!)

Right okay. So i nursed the car to a car park down the road just to find out when these noises actually occur.
Noise comes from the drivers side while turning left(doesnt have to be full lock) but also the noise occurs during breaking in a straight line slowly, as you would pulling up to a set of traffic lights.

I already have a new set of bearings so i shall put those in anyway once wev had a good look at the condition of the hub and found the cause of the problem.

Does the noise happening in a straight line while breaking suggest a alternative reason?

Asphalt, dont worry, i wont be going anywhere or doing anything else until this problem sorted :D

Sorry for all my questions and lack of knowledge.

Ps. My dads friend used to work on Minis a lot so im sure hel give us a second opinion as well

No need to excuse! :D Didn't mean to sound harsh; if I did :(
After all that's why we're here (to spread knowledge).

But yeah - as said, some things can't be explain with text.
I got most of my experience by looking over the shoulders of the professionals. :D

Hope you get it sorted soon!

And have a look where you could borrow a torque wrench that can do 210lb/ft at least
(Excat torque figures are in the manual)
