I bought a 5 litre tub of brake cleaner for about £12 (Here)
and it worked great, got the muck off then evaporated and didn't stink the place out for weeks. Cleaned my whole engine externally and all internal components for the rebuild back to spotless with 5L of it, and I've still got about 1l left. Absolutely great stuff.
It's also brilliant for cleaning the acres of gasket surface up on mini engines, it gets old instant gasket and solid paper gaskets off, giving you a proper grease free surface for the new gasket sealant to get a good grab on.

Find a local engineering company, for general parts cleaning, I use a product called Slick HD, goes in your std machine mart type parts washer, good stuff and lasts for ages..
Data sheet for Slick HD - http://fleming-tech....23/083251SL.HTM
However, if you want "Really" clean then you need some serious *melon*... the stuff I use in my dip tank is a decarbonising solution, needs to be carefully managed, and is very expensive...
Look up DICHLOROMETHANE on google...

I filed my parts wash with Kerosene, I tried gunk & some water based degreasers but when it comes to getting thick grease & oil off they were rubbish. Kerosene is spot on, cleans it up lovelly, But don't get any sparks etc near it or you could have some fun.Hi all,
Anyone know to a good parts cleaner thats better than gunk?
Thanks.

I agree,, I too have tried water based degreasers and I was not impressed. I found them effective if you could leave the parts soak for a day,, then the grime fell off,,, but if you just want to scrub it clean quickly and effectively, I reckon its hard to go past Kero.
A trick I use when I know that I'm going to pull down a motor and gear box for a rebuild, is that I run Diesel Engine Oil in it for 50km. It has a higher level of detergents than normal oil, so when you pull it down it is much cleaner to start with. Some people aren't big on the idea though for the reason than they worry that it runs too clean and can maybe cause damage as a reslut,, but my argument is that if its only for 50km you won't do any damage and if you're going to rebuild it what does it matter anyway?
Good luck with your search

If you read the label on the side you will find out why... It contains a chemical ( can't remeber what it is off the top of my head ) which attacks aluminium, like wise with commercial dishwasher solutions, you need to find one which is specifically for aluminium therefore at least twice the price..
I'll find out what the chemical is, and it's alternative...
It came to me in a flash of inspiration...
Sodium hydroxide - BAD
Potassium hydroxide - GOOD
