Ok, yet another seemingly easy task really isnt easy. How the hell do you install these dash cards? They seem too big and the defrost vent hoses get in the way. Has anyone used these?

I have used what should be the equivalent from Newton, although my car is old enough that I don't have the ventilation parts to deal with that you probably have.
You start by taking everything else off the dash, especially the lower (horizontal) cover. My car is a Mk1 so I also took the center binnacle out. I don't know if that's required on Mk2 and later but I imagine it would be. You slip a panel in placing it more towards the middle of the dash, bowing it slightly, and pressing inward. Once it's behind the top dash rail you slide it to the appropriate side.
I cannot begin to suggest how to handle the ventilation components.

I made my own version of these many moons ago - and yes they are difficult to install - just have patience and take your time - it's all too easy to damage them!

Hi.. you will need to make a trial copy from cardboard before you attempt to fit good ones as I found out and wasted a set as they do not fit without modifing them ..............
once you have made and test fitted card board copy make good your minispares items then fit bottom on to parcel shelf first them using your forarm push card in then run fingerd alont top and tuck it under top rail and to remove pass your hand into widest part next to center speedo and slide forarm behind and pop it out .........good luck.........

You know, after reading Mk1leg's post and thinking back on it, I do remember tearing up my index fingers when I last put the dash cards in.

yeah I got the same problem. I got brand new dash cards without the vent bit though and they seem waaaaaaaaaaay too big to fit. I've bent them a bit but still no joy so will have to modify them a bit to make them fit.
