so both my front brake drum plate have cracked at their bolt on position and have dropped although still attached hence a rather annoying rattling noise.

-How urgent is the job?
-How difficult is the job?
-How much would it cost?
-Where is the cheapest place to get the parts?

-A friend actually took them off saying they werent needed and were just "mud guards" for the brakes.

What should I do?

if it is actually your brake drum back plate, then don't drive anywhere as you'll have no brakes...

however, if it's the stone gaurd around the DISK, then remove them, as all they do is exactly the opposite of what they are meant to do and trap stones between them and your disk.

if it is really the drum backplate, then it is very urgent.

but if you have discs instead and it is just the disc brake shield, then it's not that urgent

Take em off!! Mine done exactly the same, well to be precise the nearside one did, at first I thought I had broken something rather expensive the noise it made rattling around!! Take em off, more trouble than they are worth!! Had no issues since!!

Hi,
Glad you managed to identify them as just the disc stone guards, you had me worried that you had drum brakes! As the previous posters said, you can remove and DISCard them with no ill effects - I did many thousands of miles without them and never really noticed any difference and there is far less chance of picking up stones. If you really want to replace them, Minisport have them, but I'm not sure of the current price.
Regards,

Easy enough! But really not necessary.

to replace you need to remove the wheel and calliper and steering tie rod and just slide the new ones in...

You can probably pickup a pair on here for pennies, or in a couple of weeks, I'll be doing another 99p_no_reserve_minispares sale on ebay ( 100's of items starting @ 99p ) and I know there's a few sets of these kicking around

Hi,
Jack it up, remove roadwheel, remove nut from trackrod end, remove 2 bolts from caliper mount, fling old bits into correct re-cycling bin. Fit new shield, re-torque both caliper bolts and trackrod end nut. Refit wheel and test on way to the pub to celebrate!

Regards,

You make that sound so easy (and it is of course).
Just remember TORQUE, TORQUE, TORQUE. >_<

Quite right, no requirement for these shields for MOT, in fact most testers would prefer to be able to see your discs.
