Im currently timing my camshaft in and need to get to 110 degrees. It was at 108.25 so i bought a 1' offset woodruff thinking it would be at 109.25 degrees and allowing for the chain to stretch would be around the 110'. But no matter how many times i check the most i can get is 108.5'. Am i right in thinking that 1' should add on 1' on the final figure or is that not the case.

Any help would be much appreciated before i order another one!
cheers

Depending on which way you turn the key you should be able to position things + or - 1 degree. When you made your measurements to find TDC and the LCA, did you take a single reading with the DTI to find the "top". Or... did you use the method where you "average" the angle measurements by taking the average of the DTI shortly before and after its max reading?

I assume you searched for threads related to this topic. There have been a couple during the past 6-8 weeks that will clarify what I'm asking above.

Hi doug, i did the measurements using a dial guage and the average of the two readings before and after. Hmm perhaps my 1st measurement wasnt correct. Will order a 2 degree key if it should literally alter the setting by the number on the key.

Just done some more searching and read a post that says that a new chain will stretch up to 2 degrees in 1500miles on the camshaft timing.
Probably leave it as it if thats the case, any thoughts on this appreciated.
Does it effect the engine performance that much. (its 1380)
cheers

Yes it's a very good idea to advance your cam timing to take account of this. My camshaft is meant to be timed in at 106 degrees, so instead I'm aiming for 104 degrees.

About deg deg advance from manufacturer's recommended is good when fitting a new chain. I did a check on a duplex chain which has stretched by 2 deg after about 850 miles and one hard rally, so 2 deg is right for a road car chain.
If you are a degree or so out it really won't be noticeable. The use of offset keys is a great way to get it correct, but it will never be perfect. What it does allow you to do is to remove really bad inaccuracies, like the 9 deg retarded i had on a new duplex kit a few months ago.it was a budget duplex gea set, I don't know from whom as the customer supplied them for fitting, but they were just so inaccurate. I set that to 2 deg advanced and he engine, a 1330 unit, runs fine and is very nice to drive.
