hi, have put a fast road engine in my mpi. oil temp reads up to 90 degrees (taking it easy driving, in the winter).

am thinking of fiting an oil cooler on an 80 degree thermostat.

has anyone else done this? any views or opinions?

thanks

Shouldn't need one, normal running temperature should be between 90 and 120 and remember, if the oil is too cold it could can also cause damage!!

on the old engine the gauge hardly moved.

will see how things go, once its set up and i give it a thrash

got a feeling it may be moving more towards the 120 mark then, as it gets to nearly 100 just cruising at 70 with low revs at the moment

It's a common fault to find the oil temperature sensor and oil pressure switch sensor accidentally swapped over as they are very similar and use the same connector type, this may have been your problem before ? (I had it on mine when I first bought it and once swapped over was okay).

nah, everything is in the right place. bearing in mind 70 on the motorway is aprox 3500 revs, and 80 is at 4k (due to my chpice of gearing), this is much higher than the usual mpi minis. its also a newly built engine, so has little wear, tighter tollerences etc.

will wait until the warmer weather comes and see how it goes

My MPi pulls 84mph @ 4,000 rpm and on long motorway runs does get up to 120 degC on warm days but does not go any higher, also drops back off within a few miles of slower running off motorway. Normal running around town etc. it keeps at around 90 degC so it appears to be operating in the correct range?

will wait until the warmer weather comes and see how it goes - we're all waiting for that :- Mini's don't like the winter, roll on the summer !!!

Don't forget you have a 5 speed box on the bottom of your engine Nick....

As for an oil cooler on an MPi, your issue will be getting one which fits... obviously the only place you can fit the take off for the cooler is between the filter and the block and there aint much room there... this is assuming you're still using the MPi block....

Do you have a sump guard fitted ?

Not quite the same but my 206 GTi oil temp gauge sits at 90 during general driving but around 110 on the motorway.....

Yes, and they use the stubby oil filters commonly used on Renaults

minispeed do an mpi oil cooler kit for about £100

http://www.minispeed...-oil-cooler-kit

I've not seen it personally but i'm guessing its ok......if you do want to get an oil cooler (i'm thinking of one for my 1380 mpi) try and get one with a thermostat built into the sandwich plate. This will stop the flow of oil into the cooler before it gets up to temp, otherwise you'll just be cooling the oil before it get a chance to warm up, which could be bad news for your engine....
