Cooper 1275 Mpi
1996
Jumped in to the car this morning to move it to give it a big wash and the mat was soaking as was the carpet.
So I started thinking what it could be checked the headling and all the high spots expecting to find the cause, but everything was dry.
Had a feel in the passenger side and it is all dry.
The rear of the drivers side is also dry.
So I was a bit stumped. The one difference is that my drive has a slight incline and last night for the first time I reversed onto the drive.
This meant that the car was front higher than the rear. Not sure if this may have an effect.
The drivers side door step has a small hole which is gradually getting bigger.

So I got it up on the ramps and axle stands and had a look underneath but nothing jumped up to say this is the route cause of the problem.
So I was wondering if there are any usual problems on minis which may result in this type of a problem.

All advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Martin.

The front windscreen seal might be the culprit.

More so if your scuttle is quietly rusting away underneath it (quite common I'm afraid).

Theres loads on the forum about leaks, most common areas are air vents behind dash, manufactured holes in bulkhead by pedal box and same on the passenger side, or doors, oh and generally rusty floors with holes in, oh and maybe windscreen seals gone, basically do a search on here, plenty of options to choose from, process of elimination really, but if you have carpets in, get them out to dry, soggy carpets= condensation build up and trapped moisture on the floor pans which we all know Mr Rust loves!

Could also be the heater leaking!

I had the same problem on both sides, i replaced the windscreen seal and that seemed to do the job.
No more puddles in the footwells rusting holes in the floor. :)

If it's the first time you parked it with the front higher than the back, and it's the first time it's leaked, then it looks like the windscreen seal is the prime suspect.

When it rains/wash the car water runs down the window, into the door and over the seal, into the drivers footwell in mine.
I still havent got round to changing the seals...Il put it on the to do list :)

Also the rain will be running back along the channels the bonnet lip sits in and may be finding its way through a hole in the bulkhead.

Im very new to Mini's but I have one question. Why did they put holes in the floor? Im currently wondering why I have two holes in the floor pan w/ rubber grommets. It doesnt make any sense to me. Even w/ the rubber grommets in, water still gets in. I checked my heater and around the bulk head, no sign of moisture so it is def. coming from those holes. Why did they put holes there?

Thanks guys I think I need to check out my windscreen seal and see if it could be the cause.

TooFPaste39 I am not sure about Mini's but I know in more modern cars the holes can be for a number of various things from locating the panels during the assembly and manufacturing process and also to enable some drainage during the cleaning and electroplating of the body.

Thanks

Martin.

That shouldn't happen on an MPi Mini as it will have the thicker bonnet seal that runs part way down the wings.

So if I decided to weld it shut, it would do no harm?

during the manufacturing process teh mini was submersed in an anti roof 'bath' (hard to believe i know ) the holes in the footwell was too let the liquid draing out. i know taffy has some links to videos that show the manufacturing process that shows this.
