If it is ONLY your brake lights not working then I would first check the bullet conectors in the wiring harness in the boot, particularly the green/purple wire. You might have caught the wire whilst getting something out of the boot and dissconnected it or the connectors might need cleaning. Those bullets corrode easily
The brake light switch is attached to the pedals on a bracket. You can test if needs replacing by simply unpluging the two wires and joining them together, with the ignition on; the brake lights should light.

The reason I ask is that the usual answer is: "Somebody told me" which could just mean that it's simply that both bulbs have now blown...It's very rare for anybody to bother telling you that one light is out, but they soon let you know if they don't work at all.

One other quick thought...How did you find out that your brake lights didn't work? It's rare to find out for yourself because you can't see them.

I was going to take it on a 250 mile round trip and checked all the lights first. I'm ashamed to admit I took my wife's SUV instead.
