Hi lovely helpful knowledgable TMFers! I'm after info and opinions please

This is my 1988 City E in Atlantic Blue (sorry the photos aren't perfect for this purpose, best I could find!)

The previous owner removed the decals and I have been debating (for ages!!) whether or not to get some made for him so that he is returned to how he would have looked from new, but I have some questions!

1) Does anyone know what colour/style of decals he would have had from the factory?

2) And if I can't find out what the originals decals were, which would look better on his colour, black, white, or other?

3) Do people think he would look good with decals, or better left alone?

Thanks everyone

Cheers bud, that's cool, and much appreciated. EDIT - now seen you're photo, they look lush! Keep em! Hope the project is getting safely closer to the point when you're making decal choices!

**To xBR4DLEY and anyone else who might know! - did all minis have the same decals throughout the 80s? And I'm unsure because Atlantic blue is quite a pale but smokey blue - so although I've seen quite a few darker coloured minis with black decals, I can't picture what they'd look like on his lighter colour, hence thinking about white as well.**

I have an odd feeling they might have been green and pink, but don't know why I think that - in which case he'd be staying decal free, or having alternative ones because I hate pink!

You can find the 1989 Mini brochure which features the Mini City here: -

Click Me

Just click the images to enlarge.

I remember that like the Mayfair, the City had a bit of a makeover from October 1988. Which mostly consisted of the addition of head rests for the seats and a servo for the brakes.

I can't remember if the exterior decals changed much though.

I also remember it getting a makeover in October 1985 when the classic cyclops central speedometer was replaced with the Clubman style twin instrument pack and the decals changed postion. Plus it stopped being the City E and was badged as just the City again.

I'm not sure if that was during 1985 or 1988 though?

After looking closer at your pictures, I'd say your Mini would have had the City logos in silver and mounted on the rear panel.

Thanks for your reply Taffy. Arthur is a funny one because he was registered in the middle of September 1988, but has the brake servo - but not the headrests! Also I think the phasing out of the City E must have been in the October of 1988, because he's definitely a City E.

Cheers also for the link to Rob Lightbody's brochure, shame they didn't feature an Arthur coloured mini in any of the brochures on the website :( but love looking at them :)

I think unless I can (somehow!) find out for sure what colour decals he would have had I might leave him naked. Although he's not completely original I think I'd like to ensure that any changes are 'authentic' and boost his originality rather than just doing stuff for the sake of it!

Cheers again

Edit: then again silver decals would look pretty cool and be in fitting with his chrome coloured bumpers and grey door handles / wheel arches... here we go again, just can't make a decision!!

You could try Somerford Mini: Click Here and search the City decals matching your car's production year...

As for your paint, if you wanted to know your car's original colour, it should be mentioned in codes, on the same plate as your VIN number on the left hand scuttle... You can also check this site: Mini Colours

Good luck....

Aha! Thank you Aria Aradhea for the Somerford link, will have a proper nose at that later, good work you TMFers on links for me to investigate further! :-

By the way Atlantic Blue (JPW) is Arthur's original colour, it's what colour any original decals would have been that is causing me to be confusibubble
