Hi everyone,
Does anyone know the law regarding tyres protruding the arches? I think I have an idea but I want it confirmed before I fork out on new arches...

Here's how much they stick out, they're 12x6 Revos.

It used to be no tread visible at all from directly above the wheel. So your fronts are definitely not OK and the rears probably aren't either if the constable / mot man is having a bad day!!

Look ok to me, mine stick out roughly the same and never had any trouble.

I think its a law that quite often gets overlooked if the wheels dont stick out ridiculously. Its not an MOT failure.

Paul.

The way I understand it is if you stand directly in front of the wheel and look straight down at it, if you can see any tread past the wheel arch it is an MOT failure/excuse for the plod to pull you over.

Yeah it passed the MOT like that (I think, I haven't had the car long), I think I'll leave it until I get told off (not the attitude I suppose, but I like the standard arches...)

Minispares did some the same style as that but about an inch wider, not sure if they still do.
That way you keep the same style and keep legal

Your front tyres are illegal, the rear tyres are fine.

Both are illegal.

Hold a straight edge vertically against the tyre/rim, if it dosent touch the arch its illegal.

i know this as i've been through it with the police and has my MOT revoked.

I guess you mean these?

They would be perfect, but unfortunately I really don't have £100 burning a hole in my pocket. May have to ask for christmas... >_<

i always thought it was a quarter inch,
ie. you can have a quarter inch of the tread sticking out past the arches

i think its changed slightly recently, i think its now your wheels can stick out but the tyres cant more than 20mm, thats why most euro style cars have stretched tyres, allows them to have wide wheels and stay legal, it also looks good imo

Often gets overlooked but if tread shows technically illegal, I never had any problems:
