Hi Guys,
I am looking for a 1275cc engine and found that MG 121 metro use the same 1275cc as the mini does.
are all the engines in the Metro's the same or do the different year models have different engines??

also would the front disk brakes from a MG metro fit on 1971 mini K

Thanks
Skippy

There are different engines fitted to Metros. The MG (Mk1), GTa and Van den Plas had the strong 72HP unit ('hot' cam & large valve head, alloy inlet manifold). Others had a 60HP unit. Later MGs got a 63HP-ish engine. And there was a ultra-low compression engine for the Metro Van (IIRC something about 8.8:1 CR). And starting with the Rover 100 series in late 1994 they were fitted with the Rover K-Series engine (would need a custom subframe, amongst other things).

Brakes would fit, but if you plan on using the Metro hubs you'll need a fully adjustable suspension to account for the Metro's different svivel pin angle. Also they need a special (but readily available) brake hose to convert for Mini use (Metros have two brake hoses each side).

Certainly grab the engine unit - the brakes 'can' be made to fit - but much easier (and just as good brakes) to grab a complete set of discs from a later Mini. If you fit them with Fiesta MKI calipers you can keep the 10" wheels too!

1999 metro? I think you've confused the austin metro with the geo metro sold in the USA.

* 1980–1990 - 998 cc A-Series, 48 hp (35 kW) at 5500 rpm and 54 ft·lbf (73 Nm) at 3250 rpm
* 1980–1990 - 1275 cc A-Series, 60 hp (44 kW) at 5250 rpm and 72 ft·lbf (98 Nm) at 3200 rpm
* 1982–1989 - 1275 cc A-Series, 73 hp (54 kW) at 6000 rpm and 73 ft·lbf (99 Nm) at 4000 rpm (MG Metro)
* 1983–1989 - 1275 cc A-Series turbo, 94 hp (69 kW) at 6200 rpm and 85 ft·lbf (115 Nm) at 2650 rpm (MG Metro Turbo)
* 1989–1990 - 1275 cc A-Series, 73 hp (54 kW) at 6000 rpm and 73 ft·lbf (99 Nm) at 4000 rpm (Metro GTa)

That's the ones you can use. They all fit. But you need to change the engine mounts over from the Mini. And some Metros have a cable operated clutch and need the Mini's clutch arm. Gearchange & drive shafts need to be Mini too (rod change & pot joints - they fit from any Mini). The K-Series Metro / Rover 100 Series was build 'til 1998.

looks like I'm in the market for a "1983–1989 - 1275 cc A-Series turbo, 94 hp (MG Metro Turbo)". got any idea of approx how much this engine should set me back??

also what do you mean by changing the engine mount over from the mini? do i need to modify the sub frame or just bolt on a different mount?

Thanks
