I have recently brought a 1275 engine out of a metro and checked the block numbers and the engine has 72bhp standard. im looking to take it up to 1293 and get some sort of cam and cylinder head and new pistons.
Im just wondering what sort of things id need to do to get to the 100bhp mark!
Any comments would be of help.
thanks

dont know much about building engines, but ive always wanted to supercharge my 1275, will have to wait till im older for insurance but it adds upto 60% power increase

how do you check the engine number to see the power as standard?

also, the majority of people who ive spoken to said that 1293 wouldnt give you a massive inscrease

I typed in A series engines into google and a booklet came up on PDF and it has all the Cylinder head casting identication numbers on.

Supercharging Sounds a good idea but a little expensive

cheers ill have a poke around the web

it may seem expensive, but i think its well worth it. if you think about pounds spend to percentage increase it seems well worth it
plus youll always have that whine of the supercharger there

There are a few ways of getting 100bhp out of a large bore block. None will be 'cheap' but some more expensive than others, some will be unreliable and some will be horrible to drive as a road car.

There is an old addage when building engines along the lines of:
Cheap, Reliable, Powerful - You can only ever acheive 2 of these 3 options, all 3 is impossible!!

Supercharging is expensive but will produce a powerful, driveable car.
Lairy cams will be cheaper and help produce more power but will be a pig to drive.
Large overbores (73mm +) with sensibly chosen cams (SW5, 276, RE13OT) is the usual way to go, but to do it properly (and hence reliably) it will still be heading for 4 figures.

Then you need to think about uprating the diff, uprating the brakes and suspension etc etc etc.

A well built n/a 1380 will be touching 100 horses. With a 1293 I think you'd struggle to get that without forced induction.

An engine is a big air pump really - the more air it can pump the more power it makes so:

improve flow efficiency
make it bigger
spin it faster
add an auxilliary pump (turbo or 'charger)

i could only get 90bhp out of my 1293 and every part has been upgraded for fast road so i will be investing in a supercharger next year because its my daily driver. the rolling road tuner said that i couldnt get anymore out of it any way >_<

Nowadays, the cheapest, most reliable and quickest way to get that sort of power is to put a supercharger on it....

As above

Also, why go 1293 and push for power? you might aswell just go for a 1380? you will more than likely have the same reliability either way? Surely you have more of aim than just hitting a hundered horses?

As guessworks said the norm now is to whoopercharge it, although some people just bolt it on with no changes internally on the block or gearbox?

It's gonna cost either way?

i have had a read of what every one is saying but its not that hard to get 100bhp out of a 1293 or even a n/a 998
i have a friend who works at mini speed and has got proven 102bhp out of a 998
and while i worked there we had a few 1293's come in on mapable ECU getting up to 120bhp
I am currently build a 1293 for my self as is the best bore for supercharging as more reliable

got to be 1:5 rolling rockers
stage II or III head depending on funds
kent 286 or 296 scatter cam
turbo bottom end
debating over oil cooler
mega jolt ignition
stage 2 maniflow exhaust manifold and votex pipe

have a look around its not so hard to get the 100bhp mark !!
also another less expensive way of touching 100bhp or more is 998 turbo have a look at phills 20hour convertion
good luck :withstupid:
