Basically I may have the chance to get a 1980 phase 1 renault 5, possibly very low mileage. It belonged to the first wife of a guy I work with and he put it in his garage after she passed away (no idea how long ago this was) and since then its been sitting behind 7 other cars and forgotten about. It was in perfect mechanical condition when it was stored and has developed a bit of rust on the rear wings (very common on these cars)

unfortunately it isnt an alpine/gordini and it doesnt have the funky dashboard mounted gearstick so would it be worth anything to someone if I can get it roadworthy? I'd like to keep it myself (love the renaults) but dont really have space for it :(

not greatly valueable as it has a small market, that gearbox configuration was carried over from the 4 making it very early.

Knowing you marketing i would expect it to be worth 1300 quid if it is sub 30k and mint, dropping to around 800 for something i would consider as smart.

Its worth having at the right price fair on insurance the Gordini models are worth a bit and go fast they are hard to work on like the GT. Turbo ones.

cheers for the replies!

had another chat with the guy and its a 1400 engine (which i didnt even think was available that early) and the rear arches are rusted out. He doesn't know the mileage but it went into storage in 1990, so on the road for 10 years, off the road for 19, so hopefully a good chance of low mileage

we've already got a GT Turbo so wouldn't be looking to modify it, might just keep it for retro motoring, two tone paint job and some wider alloys....

its not even that old really

its the first (and kind of forgotten) generation of one of the most popular hatchbacks , basis for the 5 Gordini, Gordini Turbo, Renault Turbo and Turbo 2, renaults last hatchback with a longitudinal engine and front wheel drive, and it just looks so damn retro!

but maybe thats just me lol

What are you lot smoking?
An early 1.4 renny 5? non turbo? nothing special at all infact? with rotten rear arches? Its worth scrap value really - there is very little going or it as a car - no real interest as a collectionable model and only fringe enthusiasm from some retro car fans.
Besides, if its been sitting for ten years, its going to need 4x new tyres, probably new brakes all round, an afternoons general recomissioning work to get it running well, and then the bodywork will need repaired, then painted.....Is it worth the hassle for a car thats potentially worth a couple of hundred quid when finished?
Have a look on Retro Rides forum, im sure you could find a good running one for much less than you would spend getting this one running.

Cheers Mk1Jim i like the simple answers lol

as for doing any work on it, we have a garage with three 4 post ramps, welding equipment (and being an ex renault garage plenty of spares  ) and painting i can do myself so shouldn't cost much at all

and if it does look like too much work, there's a DAF 1300 rally car in the workshop that needs a cylinder head lol

no worries, thats based on it being an early phase 1, phase 2 cars will be worth a lot less
