Had a lucky escape today! i was driving along and heard a funny whizzing noise, so i braked, and it got a bit quieter, but it pulled to the side! got to the farm, pulled into the drive, and there was a scraping noise! rolled it into the work shop, jacked it up, and the passanger wheel was wobbling around! whizzed it off, and the castle nut was very loose, and the whole hub was wobbling!
the split pin had snapped and the castle nut had worked loose! luckily the bearings and shaft were still ok, so put the castle nut back on and checked the other side, and the split pin was still holding it, but it looked like the thrust washer was wearing, so put a washer behind the castle nut and put a larger stronger split pins in! is this something that happens or could this wear be down to having the 13x7 wheels?

It probably means the bearing has worn down and needs replacing. There shouldn't be any way for the nut to suddenly slacken off enough to start turning against the pin. The taper washer might simply have worn because the nut span against it though.

oh they are only a year (if that) old, we did check the bearings though and they were fine, could there be anything else causing this?

The CV joint or the hub could have worn. Check the thickness of the taper washer with a mic and compare it to the one on the other side. If they are both the same it hasn't worn and if it hasn't worn something else has because something has caused the size of the assembly to close up.

Bearings might not have play when adjusted up but they can still be worn excessively and you will be forever taking them up.
New bearings are not thet expensive ..
