today i took my car for a drive and it was goin well until it just stopped, it was like i had took the key out but when io turn the key it starts then cuts out then i start it and it does and then cuts out if i hold the key in the turned position it keeps running but so does the starter motor could this be down to a breather on the carb or does it sound like an electrical fault sometimes it wont do it for 10 miles then it will do over and over again it is a mini 25 with a 1275 metro engine in running standard carb and standard exhaust

Electrical fault - break - in the 'ballast' supply to the coil! So when starting - the ballast is by-passed and it runs - but when you release the key, the bypass stops - and so does the engine. Temporary supply direct to coil from battery will get it running - but will roast the coil if you run it for more than a few minutes like that.

As I said - run a wire direct to the coil and run the engine!

If it works - start looking at the ballast wire for broken connection/trapped or cut wire.
