Yesterday my partner who has a 55 plate scooby with all the trackers, immobilisers, central lockings and alarm systems built into it etc's battery went flat and he had a right head ache sorting it out, had people from the tracking company rining him up etc etc - was a right pain.
I was going to get an alarm fitted when the mini is all done but now im not sure whether i want anything too electrical as love the mini being so simple and wouldnt ever get locked out by fancy alarm systems etc....
I really need security for when I leave it parked up at work etc and would like peice of mind now its all done up. anyone have any suggestions please on what I could use or know of any alarm systems that arent OTT technically.

...ok, there are some basic alarms which monitor battery voltage, so if a door opens, the interior light comes on and alarm goes off. But doesn't help if access is via window.
If you want a decent alarm and not suffer flat starting, get a second battery (doesn't have to be as big...or use multiple sealed alarm batteries from Maplin and tuck them away) have this wired via a blocking diode and fit the alarm to the secondary battery. If the alarm flattens the battery, your main starter will still be OK. when you use the car, the secondary battery will charge up again.
It sounds complicated, but trust me, it isn't.

I use a disckloc (sp), in the small size. It's thatcham cat3 and pretty secure. In fact, I prefer a visual deterent, nothing will stop the most determined scum, but opportunists won't bother IMO.

Removal steering wheel. No wheel no drive. Its the next security mod I intend to carry out. Also I have got a fuel cut off tap to fit into the fuel line. Once its shut off the car is going nowhere.

i've just come from Halfords (Cannock A5) and it's gone proper boring! gone are the many aftermarket seats (replaced with 2 aisles of baby seats!) gone is the wall of HUs (replaced by disabled buggies) ...far too grown up

Yeah i left halfords feeling a bit dissapointed, had hardly anything there except lots of camping stuff. Not much at all for car bits etc like they used to have...
I've ordered some toad security stickers, I know its not much but its a start. Then Im thinking the battery shut off thing for in the boot and a visual lock like the steering wheel one... Going look in to it.

if you plan to put a large cut-off switch to the battery, don't forget to put a small fused cable direct to the battery terminal to power the alarm & permanent live of the HU when the rest of the car is shut-off.
another simple (& very cheap) immobiliser is to take 2 wires from the ignition coil and hide a rocker switch (ie under dash or chair) and when the switch is closed it stops the engine firing.
