hey guys,

just a random question saw in a topic just now that running an engine too rich can cause damage to a newly built engine! I have recently rebuilt my engine as most of you probably know and since then after 100 miles of joyful driving the piston rings went! The car is running a stage one kit and the appropriate needle which I set roughly at a tad rich (yes i know i needs to be rolling roaded to get mixture spot on)! unfortunately the choke spring failed and I didn't notice this means that my 100 miles were running very rich! Infact the last 20 of those miles the engine was misfiring but still just bout manage 65 down the motorway! I had to get home! very stressful drive!

what damage could this running rich cause! would this explain my burnt out piston rings?

thank u!

running rich = 'bore wash' - the excess fuel cleans the oil away from the bores knackering up the bores and rings.

Worst case scenario is a rebore.

must have been extremely rich, i mean to the point of it not idling, i know how it causes the damage, i just dont know how to explain it, lol basically i think the unburnt stuff, sits between the top of the crown and the bores, and strips the lubricative layer off or something like that

All I can add, I think your describing bore wash, irc its when your running that rich that the excess fuel dilutes/contaminates the oil in the bores causing a breakdown of the oil. This stops the oil doing its job off dissipating heat and reducing friction and as such causing damage to the friction material. I only add this as an opinion and not as an absolute of statement of fact, guru's can feel free to correct me.

Like icklemini said (just noticed mid post :))
