I was down at my local mini place getting some bits and pieces for my MOT. I got talking about a cylinder head he had sitting around. I think its a 12g950... I think thats right, it's from a 1071 Cooper S. Its pretty old and I would need to start using a lead substitute if I fitted it, but the guy said I could get it with all the valves etc. all set up ready to bolt onto my 998 block for £60 (I think that includes fitting/help fitting as I've never done it before). Yay or Nay?

How much would you normally expect one to go for?

If it's in good all round condition shall I take his hand off?

I saw one that went for £80 a few weeks back, If I were you I'd get it, best thing I did to my mini was fit a new head

Hmmm... I' m keen but can't really be chewed with it needing the lead additive. I'll pop back tomorrow and give it a good looking at. I think I'ts still on the engine atm.

Would I be better off getting a 1275 head in terms of performance? (Is it poss to get away with the 1275 head on a 998 withought pocketing?)

Edit: Don't worry about the number I gave you, that was just what I remembered after driving home and logging on.

A 1071 head is a 1275 head.... or rather they are the same head.... A 1071 is a short stroke 1275.

On balance a decent cooper S head will be equivalent to many peoples stage 2/3 heads.

PS... If it's still on the engine, ask him how much he wants for that too ? :D

oooooh alright, does that mean the 1071 could do with pocketing, since it's a well breathing 1275 in essence? (forgive me if I'm not quite getting this right) :D

If it is a 1071 S head on the engine buy the lot.

My money is on it being a 12G295 head off a 998 cooper otherwise he would not have recommended fitting it to a 998?

£60 is about on the money for a 12g295 head.
