Model:998cc engine mini city
Year:1989

i have a bog standard 998 engine in my mini. and as im 17, i dont want an "engine transplant" to keep my insurance down.

i have a few questions. how many "stage" kits are there? like stage 1, stage 2 etc

also, are they easy to fit to the engine?

thirdly, could i also fit a way of forced induction to the engine? or is it nor worth the effort?

(p.s) i dont know what the stage kits do, so if they are forced induction, i appologise for my ignorance

thanks
chris

On a well maintained engine a stage 1 kit which includes, a free flow air filter, new needle for the carb, an inlet manifold, free flowing exhaust manifold and exhaust system, should give between 10 and 20% performance improvement over a std 998.

You will need to notify your insurance company of the modification but it's a common mod and should not affect it too much...

Anything over that you're looking at engine mods which will bump the costs...

next step would be a modified head to allow the engine to get the gasses in and out better

could add up to another 10-15% depending on spec of the head

head and cam will give the biggest increase, but go the stage 1 first as said. also a rolling road session will do wonders too.

thanks for the advice guys even if some of it is comming from a chelsea fan :) (only kidding)

i realised i could never afford a full engine conversion with rollcage and 400 odd horse power, so iv decided to make a small engines light car instead, and have poly carb windows to save weight, strip the car etc etc

thanks for the advice

Be sure to clear anything with your insurer first though before you do it.

All the above is correct, start with a stage 1 kit, then for more power comes an uprated head and cam.

Just so you know our fast road 998cc engine (basically with a uprated head and cam) put out around 65bhp average depending on the cam, the same as a 1275. So thats the kind of power you can expect.
