Are you referring to the clutch release bearing as a thrust bearing? It can be done in the car, bit harder, and is easier with the engine out, but seeing as its an MPI I would have to think twice weather it would be better to just do it in the car.

Paul.

What other 'bits' do you have to do? There is no need to take the engine and gearbox out just to replace a noisy clutch release 'thrust' bearing or the clutch itself.
(If you did mean the crankshaft thrust bearings then that is a different matter.........but then they don't normally make any noise.)

Hi,
Yes, a much easier job with the engine on the bench or floor (it can't fall anywhere from there) but you will need a flywheel puller for the later Verto type clutch - to extract the flywheel from the taper on the crank. Definitely be worth checking/replacing the deva pinion oil seal (the big red one around where the clutch plate fits) on the transfer case if it shows any wetness. Points to watch are: not mixing up the various bolts as some are coarse thread into alloy and others fine into steel/cast iron and torqueing everything on build up and replacing tab washers. Worth checking engine mount rubbers too. With the unit sitting on a sheet of ply, painting is easy and when you hoist it up again, you can do the underside if you intend doing the box (it wasn't painted originally on MPI)
