Greetings everyone. new to the forum and to Mini Ownership. My new to me mini has a broken bracket at the firewall/bulkhead where what seems to be what is called the 'engine steady' is bolted to. The bracket is cracked on the firewall side. Do I need new bushings as well? Should I order this 'ultimate engine steady to help as well? I am a road racer and DO drive the car hard..

Does anyone know the part number for this?

I thought it was

http://www.minispare....aspx?pid=34243

But upon inspection it is the wrong bracket on the wrong side.

Here are some photos of the broken bracket, from afar

Upon inspection it looks like this bracket is held in with 4 bolts, but over the phone, a local parts house described it as a welded in bracket...

Any help with part numbers and suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks for the help. Oh and a funny picture of the car from today. :D

It runs like a scalded ape!

Thanks for the help,
Dane

the parts guy was on about the lower bracket that is welded and forms the lower part of the steady. u might need that but it is hard to see on the pictures.this. is it and is under the steady arm
defo get a new bushing for it
not entirely sure but i think it this.. that u need to replace the broken bit

It is hard to tell from the pictures, but if it is the top engine steady, then you dont need to buy any parts. Just get the bracket knocked back with a hammer and welded again. More pictures may help, but any mechanic would see the problem straight away

If you did buy new bushes and an ultimate engine steady, then although you may not need these parts, they would be an upgrade to your mini

yes thats the right type of bracket shown in your link

the bracket on the bulkhead is made up of 2 parts the bracket that on a rhd car is bolted under the master cylinders or on a left hand drive is just bolted to the bulkhead

theres also a rightangle bracket spot welded to the bulkhead looks like that has pulled away

as long as the bulhead has not rotted then can be seam welded back to the bulkhead making it stronger

as for the top bracket if the bolt has pulled through the hole the normal fix is to weld a washer to the bracket making a new stronger hole

from the looks of the engine bay your car is lhd dont think you can fit a ultimate steady as bolts where the master cylinders are on a lhd car is normally empty space on a rhd car

You need to remove the arm and do a good-quality welded repair to the bulkhead. Then re-fit with new bushes in both ends of the arm. An 'Ultimate engine steady' is an excellent modification and one which I always use in hard-driven Minis. Once fitted you'll have no more engine steady issues.
My friend who has a 1963 Cooper 'S' 1071 rally car lives not too far from you, in Thousand Oaks, CA.
Good luck with this job.

was thinkinj about this earlier while out and one engine steady that will fit is the one avonbar racing make for turbo engine cars

fits to waterpump bolts and then to the bulkhead ,but should fit under the master cylinders as a normal braket would
