I was at my local garage on friday and there was a car parked there with the bonnet up, looking at it I thought to myself thats a small motor I bet it could fit a mini. I went closer and found it was a 20 valve turbo I am trying to find how tuneable the engine is because when I measured it I am sure it will fit quite easily (engine code 4a30, fitted to a mitsubish minica toppo) the car is what is known as a kei car in Japan so it is 659cc and rated at 64hp and 71ftlb from the factory.
I am sure with a few turbo and ecu mods this could be pushed to just over 100hp and be reliable enough. If anyone knows anything about these motors it would be appreciated (we are quite fortunate here in NZ in that Jap performance small motors are cheap, we can get a complete honda vtec car for $500nz around 250 gb pounds :D )

sorry bro, waste of time and money. to get more power out of it you'd need custom turbo manifold and aftermarket ecu and probably other stuff too, which starts getting expensive. just go the honda way, they're cheap and parts are readily available for turbo etc, and the end result will have double or triple the power the little mitsi engine will ever be able to make. also, how does this really sound to you:

'i upgraded the one litre four pot in my mini to a six sixty cc three cylinder'. each to their own but it just doesnt do it for me lol.

if you want a cheap turbo engine from the factory just go grab yourself a wrecked GT starlet. those things are good and toyota make much better motors than mitsi imo.

These are 4 cyl not 3 and the figures speak for themselves really more hp and torque than a standard 1275 plus the bonus of 5 gears and modern engineering, as far as parts go they are a dime a dozen here in Christchurch NZ, I can get a complete car direct from japan for around $1000 nz. I do tend to agree with you on the fact toyota make better motors though, What I would realy like is the motor from a daihatsu sirion x4 (daihatsu and toyota are the same company), these little beuties are 733cc 4 cyl 4wd puting out close to 160hp from the factory, I know of one in the North island of NZ putting out over 200hp still running the factory ecu and internals trouble is these are still sought after cars and that pushes the price up.
I am not a big fan of the honda motors though, I don't personally like the induction noise they make and I am not a fan of the way the power is delivered (does not make for a mini that is relaxing to drive when I want it to be) plus I hate the look of the extended fronts used to fit the vtec. Personal tastes really, I like to try different things.

I'd love to see this done, it sounds like a great little engine!

Ever thought of a Nissan SR20DET ? If it could be fitted would give well over 200bhp.

all good man, i just think a turbo 660cc powered car would be horrible to drive. regardless of the number of cylinders, you just have stuff all capacity to get the thing moving. also, even if you could get more power out of it, it would be minimal and the clutch and gearbox isnt designed to take it.

if you are intent on a small turbo motor, id be looking for an old charade turbo (GTti version), they're one litre 3 cylinders so are nice and compact and make good power.

by the way, daihatsu and toyota are not the same company, toyota just owns some of daihatsu. the are definitely not the same cars or even share parts as far as im aware (unlike lexus, which is fully owned and widely share cars and parts).

I have looked at the charade 3 cyl turbo in fact frankenvan used the diesel version of that exact motor :) the petrol version of these motors have a habit of cracking heads though. the siroin x4 is far superior to that motor it is what replaced the 3cyl motor in the kei race cars, you say you doubt the motor would be able to get the car moving?? the 1000cc a series manages it quite well with half the hp and torque. the mitsi minica is also quite a bit heavier than a mini so I doubt it would have any trouble getting the car moving.

compare the mitsi motor to a 1275a+ say austin alegro, alegro 62hp @ 5600rpm 98nm @ 3200rpm
mitsi 64ps (63.12hp) @ 7000rpm 97.09nm @ 3500 rpm

looking at the specs though it could be interesting matching a head gasket to an a series 998 as the bores are pretty close 60mm on the mitsi and 64.58 on the mini hmmmmm possibly a 20v turbo 998 a series :)

so you're going to spend a lot of time and money to gain 2hp and 0.91Nm of torque? really? you've seriously got to be taking the *yellow human water*?? even if the little motor magically had decent power or torque, its still a 660cc motor. that is embarrasing.

actually, i hope you build this car and try to get it featured in performance car. i guarantee they will laugh their arses off at you.

sorry i promise this is my last post in this thread. all i have to say is that you can lead a horse to water...

good luck buddy.

damn forum edited my post. it is meant to say 'taking the *y e l l o w h u m a n w a t e r*'

and also, i was wondering what you were on about with 'frankenvan' reference, then just seen your list of cars. i cant believe you put a 3cyl turbo diesel in another car. i feel a little sorry for you :goaway:
