hi my mate has a 998 and it was doing 16mpg which is not good so he took it to a guy whi tweeked with the carb and now he is getting 45mpg just from a 10 minute tune.now my 1275 is doin about 15-20 mpg which is not good but i cant really afford to get it tuned by the same guy i wish i could, but is there any way i can just set the carb to a certain setting. i was thinking like screw all the screws in and then screw one out one turn and the other out 2 turns now is this possible i hope this makes sense also if you have any advice could you give a quick description of where the said screw is
thanks in advance

To be honest mate that sounds like a recipe for disaster. If you dont know what you are doing save yourself the aggro and leave it to someone who does.

Have a read into the Colourtune kits which are available from places such as MiniSport - Never used one myself though!

There is no magic set number of turns that give best economy/power etc. There are lots of factors to take into account when tuning a car and they all have to be set up together. Whereas your mate only needed 10 mins work on the carb (?) you may need a full service and timing set up etc etc.

Forget colourtune! It's not necessary with an SU carb. What carb is on the car ? If it's an HIF - the mixture screw is at the ~ 10 o'clock position - screw it in/out until you get the best/most even idle. Then adjust the idle speed -then tweak the mixture again etc etc until it's smooth and steady. Surely on your course - there is someone (maybe even a lecturer?) who have a look at it for you! Note - you also need to optimise the idle timing - and that may affect the best mixture setting - so you may have to reset them a couple of times to get it just right!

What are your mods and what carb do you have?
Have you tried the "Haynes" approach of pushing up the pin below the dashpot to see how it reacts?
