hi can tell me how much to take off the head to get the compression up, it is a standard 998 block with a 295 head on it,i could not locate the post with this info on it but i think is was 60thou,just to comfirm this please.

You'd be best off measuring it and working it out, the chances the head has already been skimmed in the 40 odd years since it left the factory are quite high.

I just had mine done, the machine shop measured it and took 80thou off which bought the compression up to 9-1, so as said before take yours in and get it measured first then work out what cr you want

Measure the head thickness - they all start off at 3.750" - if yours is any less - then that's how much it has already been skimmed! Also - have you done any work on the chambers - to 'unmask' the valves ? If so - then 80 thou - if not, 60 thou will be fine.
The 12G940 is of course a much better head - and needs NO skimming!
