Theres seems to be a high pitched squeeling coming from my engine, only occurs when the lights are on and even then the lights seems a bit dulled, does this mean that ill either need to tighten / replaced the fan belt?

Yes, it sounds like you need a new fan belt; NO that is not where you tighten/adjust, please see picture below:

If you tighten that one - it will soon snap. Fit a new one.

When adjusting/replacing the fan belt, remember to loosen the top mounting bolts.
If the alternator is moved with them still tight, then either the alternator mounting bracket or the mount on the water pump may break!

Best left alone - you have been warned. Why do you have to 'order' one - just pick one up - even Helfrauds will have one! Best get two - one for spare - keep it in the car.

I'm just in the process of chaning my fan belt now. The pulley was damaged by the previous owner. He obviously didn't see the allen key slot on the side. :withstupid: Never mind, my dad is now making me a new one at his work for free! It would have cost be a bomb from Mini Sapres.
The belt is probably screaming as it looks pretty old. I took mine off and it was split down the side, explains why it's screaming lol.
Once it's fixed I won't be scaring people on car parks when I pull off!

I had a bit of trouble getting it off as one of the nuts was a bit rusty ;)

hummm do you know anything bmcecosse lol ???????

Hi, you can tighten that one it won’t snap!! I lift engines out with old fan belts trust me they won’t snap lool but it will need replacing as when they start to slip the belt begins to where and does not grip properly this is all so due to the belt now having a polished surface on it (due to it slipping) not to mention when rubber gets old it perishes!! All you need is 2x 13mm or 1/2" spanners and your all set for some knuckle splitting fun lool!! Good luck thanks tony :withstupid:

Best use the correct spanners - 1/2" AF - and certainly NOT 13mm! :-
But I bow to your superior knowledge 'ready' - you obviously know FAR MORE about Minis than I do! :D

A fan belt costs a few quid, if you mess with that one tightening or, worse, applying wd40, it can snap, then your car will stop running.
So buy a new one, make sure its the correct size, measure it and check what you buy.
Replacing is a 5 minute job, and bolts are 1/2" use correct spanners please, its your car, you look after it, it looks after you =P...
