Hi Folks
I have a mini 30 im rebuilding and have started to overhaul the drive shafts/swivel hubs. But upon stripping them down and removing the wheel bearings and seals ect i have found that the wheel bearings are different on each side. One side has Timkin type taper bearings with a spacer inbetween the two bearings and a spacer under the seal on the inner side. However the other side has the two bearings but not tapered and no identification on them and no spacer inbetween the two bearings and no spacer under the inner seal. Are they ment to be bifferent either side or have i inherited someones bodge job?
Thanks Pete

Sounds like the previous owner had a bearing wear out and replaced it with a slightly cheaper ball bearing race instead of the timken, which are more expensive but then more reliable. If you want, and i would, replace it with a fresh timken roller bearing as per your other hub.

Hope this helps

Ryan

To be honest i did buy two wheel bearing kits for Minispares but was a little confused when i found the two sides were different. So now im on the hunt for the spacer between the two wheel bearings and the spacer under the oil seal.

Does the spacer between the bearings not come with the kit?? I'm sure they were matched parts. It has been a while since i have done one of these to be fair.

I can't think what the spacer under the inner seal?? hmmm think!!!!

I'll research it, unless anyone else has recent experience/knowledge.

To be honest i only ordered the hub seals from mini spares as i can order the bearings through work and sort of loose the bill if you get my meaning!!(Perks of being the storeman)But i only ordered them after stripping one side down so i could get the bearing numbers. Then when they arrived and i stripped the other side no spacer and different bearings LOL.Just looked in the haynes book and the spacer is split (like a piston ring)that fits under the seal and is described as a oil seal spacer but i only have it on one drive shaft.

The seals are a standard size too...........surprised you didn't order them! Best with proper Timkens on both sides.

Did try but they could get the type that has the white water seal/cover on it.

Unfortunately for you the wheel bearing kits are all sized to micron (1000 of a mm) so just getting the outer and inner bearings will lead to a serious challenge and rapid failure :)

Dont mean to sound rude but what other bearings are there apart from the outer and inner?

The kit contains an inner and an outer bearing along with a highly accurate spacer...... so using one out of the old set will simply not do the job correctly :)

And I didn't think that you where being rude

Ah i see what you mean now ,but the spacer i was talking about was the one that goes on top of the bearing and under the oil seal on the inner side of the hub and its split (like a piston ring)I did go back to the bearing company and get the proper spacer for inbetween the two taper wheel bearings

Be careful cause some bearings have the spacer inbuilt so you dont need a seperate part

The oil seal spacer can be left out.
