Hi, I am cleaning and restoring my mini 81 rear subframe, all going well happy with progress of cleaning and restoring radious arms, but then,......taking of the rear trunnions moutings to the load floor although using penetrating oil,the first side came of fine.... trying to undo the next nut of the fixed bolt, for the bushes and trunnion to load floor, this one snapped off and only have 2mm thread left. What do I do next? Not wanting to go down the line of buying a new subframe. do I drill it in by 4 inches deep and put a replacing steel bolt inside the steel shaft? Or cut off the bit sticking out of the subframe and weld a bolt into its place. Maybe someone here has even a better idea.

thank you

Hi there. I've moved your topic to the correct section, You had posted in the section for forum feedback and questions which has a subtitle that says

This IS NOT a section to ask questions about your Mini!!

You are now in the TECHNICAL section, which is where all matters of a mechanical nature should be posted.

erm.. i think a tad more info wld be appreciated here as im lost to be honest.lol do you mean the bolt the goes through the front subframe mount (to heelboard) has snapped off? if so then id drop the rear subframe down, if theres any bolt left sticking out fo the healborad cut it off and close and neat as you can to the healboard, centre dot the bolt (the closer the better on this one) drill straight and level into the botl with a sharp pilot drill bit gradually getting bigger. i think the last drill bit to use was a 6.8mm or 7.0mm drill bit (dnt know imperial sorry)then retap with a 5/16 unc tap. the closer you are to the centre to more chance you have of taping the old thread out of the welded nut.

you could drill tap and then use a bit of theaded bar or drill a hole down the centre tap it and then put a bolt down the middle.

just did mine and pretty sure it is actually 5/16 UNF.Decided that one can cut a small section out of rear end of sill then carefully heat the weld nuts with small oxy-acetylene nozzle. Then they are easy to remove.Rewelding the little bit of sill no prob afterwards

No - I think it's the mounting 'stud' for the rear mounts that has snapped off - seems clear enough to me and minidaves!! As suggested - drill and tap - and use a bolt and a large washer.
And learn to soak everything well in advance with Plus-gas - and apply heat before snapping anything off!

hi, I am new to this game, so here we go, I was talking about the trunnion which is positioned on the LH and RH under the boot, these trunnions slide over the 2 bushes and kept in position with a big O ring and nut.removing one nut, was fine, the other side broke off. I managed to cut a spare nut and welded it onto the end bit, all good now!
Thank you for trying to help

Hi, thanks for that, I managed to weld a spare bolt piece at the 2mm end, this feels strong enough. At the end it will not carry a heavy load, the nut will just keep the two bushes in place.

thanks

Cheers I will soak everything in advance, I hate snapping things off. I suppose I need to have a bit more care with the old girl!!
