hey all,

today i was just inspecting my daily 1989 city when i saw some rust on the front inner wheel arch, i was just wondering what is the best way?

sand paper or can you get like wire brush disk things that go onto a drill (is there a proper name for these)
after i have sanded/rubbed it down do i then use rust proof primer, paint, then waxoyl?

thanks toby.

depends how bad it is, if its BAD you may have to cut it out, or replace the panel.
If its just on the surface.

1, Rub down to the cause. How is up to you, by hand, sander, sanding disc
2, Clean away rust
3, Rust treatment
4, Mask
5, Filler or filler primer if required.
6, Primer, depending on the top coat colour, you will need different primer colours.
6, remove masking and smooth the edges of the primer with wet and dry.
7, Mask up any areas you dont want painted and spray on your topcoat and laquer.
8, Topcoat may need polishing, leave for a week or two before doing this.

Edit, just re-read your post and seen INNER wing. Wire brush, rust treatment and underseal. 8-)

Howdy :D

As mymini007 said it depends how bad the rust is.

You should always completely eliminate rust before painting, otherwise it will re-surface at some point.

Steel has pores in it (much like your skin only much much finer), the rust noramall start way down inside them. The surest way to the rust out of the pores and completely clean it is using Deoxidine or Rust Converter,, what ever it is called just make sure that the main ingredient is Phosphoric Acid.

For light surface rust, just clean it with the Acid, if it is heavier rust I would get the bulk of it off using a Wire Wheel on an Angle Grinder then use the Deoxidine on it.

You scrub the Deoxidine in with steel wool, then leave a wet coat of it sit on the panel for 20min before washing off with Metho.

Once all acid is gone, it is important that you seal the steel or it will rust again very quickly.

mymini007,, do you guys still tint your primer over there? Its not very common practice here anymore, I still do it for reds,, but do you guys still tint for all colours?
