Got a couple of questions about subs, and a couple headunits too.

Would it be possible to mount a sub in the rear firewall, with a grill over it, and then put the rear seats over them?
Obviously an enclosure would be needed, or a sub designed for a huge enclosure.

does anyone have experience of this, I quite like the no-CD concept, I'll only be using my phone via bluetooth or a lead if i need to, so it might be a good option. Only thing I'm concerned about is the power and quality of the built in amplifier.

Also, anyone had any experience with Inphase HUs? Never heard of them so i assume they're poo, but the numbers in this are appealing.

hello

i got an inphase hu for xmas. the sound quality is brilliant and has a good spec. but mines got an electrical issue in the facia panel, but ive read several reviews about them and it looks like i have just been unlucky with mine.

I have one of those type of Headunits. Mine is an Alpine IDA-X301 (linky)

They are really good!!! But that clarion looks nice.

I'v got an Alpine IDA-X100 connected up to some components and a 12" JL Audio subwoofer in the boot.

The HU runs purely on my ipod and very occasionally on the radio. CDs are SO last decade lol It's absolutely brilliant though. The Clarion doesn't look too bad, but if you've got the squids available i'd definitely recommend going for an Alpine or Pioneer HU. Their reputation for build and sound quality speaks for itself and the ease of use is excellent.

As for using the boot as an enclosure - not the best idea. If you 'Free Air' the sub (don't put it in an enclosure, but say mount it in the side of a boot liner kit), the sound quality won't be great and the boot lid will rattle LOADS. It also all depends on whether you've got holes in your parcel shelf area already or whether its an older model with either very small holes or none at all. If you already have speaker holes cut from standard (where the old 6.5"ers used to be), the sound vibrations can travel in to the car more giving a better sound, but with no way for the sound to come into the car via the holes, you'll get terrible sound.

There's a guy on here who put two 6" subs in the base of the rear bench, firing up into the arse of whoever would be sitting on the back seat. Quality idea if you ask me.

You also didn't mention if you were getting an amp for the sub. If you're putting a sub in, an amp is an absolute necessity.

Why would it blow up? Seal the boot off, its just like a big enclosure

thanks for the gfeedback cars, but if you read my post, i'm not talking about free airing it in a boot liner with a sub hole, i'm talking about mounting it in the rear firewall, firing into the back of the rear seat passengers.
Also i am indeed planning to amp it, and i have the holes cut in th parcel shelf, should i put propper port tubes in or not?
