Model:Mayfair
Year:1988
Driver side Headlight/wiring faulty

OK, to begin with my OS headlamp was dim compared to the NS one when using the switch on the dash for my side lights and full beam. I had my usual guy have a look and he said it needed a new headlight. So he fitted one and the problem remains.

I got my boyfriend to have a look and he took the OS headlight off, had a look at all the connections and put it back together again, now the switch on the dash (side lights, main beam) does nothing to the OS, but the NS light is fine. Both headlights work fine with the full beam (dash switch 'on' and the stalk pushed forwards). Full beam doesn't work without the dash switch in the 'On' position. Im not 100% sure if the dash switch has to be half on(side lights) or full(main beam) for the Full beam to work.

Under the bonnet i have 4 wires going to each headlight. There is:
Black(negative?)
Blue/White (Full Beam/Stalk?)
Blue/Red (Side Lights, Main Beam?)
Red (No idea?)

I only took the OS headlight off, there is the large lamp with 3 connections on the back. And connected to the wires there is a smaller bulb with the red/black wires going into it. When I had the lamp off, I tested the lights in all possible combinations and the smaller bulb never came on. I believe the small bulb on both sides doesn't work, as when i disconnected the NS small bulb (from the wiring loom in the engine bay) it made no difference to the OS light.

So, what I'm asking is... what's wrong with my headlight, and why wont it come on?

Also, I don't know if this is related but my rear lights (working on the switch circuit) seem to not work once in a while. This seems to be connected to the dash light on the speedo. I only have a light on the speedo, and when I turn the lights on (side/main) my other dials loose power. Is this normal? its done it since I got the car.

There are LOADS of things this might be, including, in order of likelyhood.
Dodgy earth(s).
Dodgy connections behind the front grille
Dodgy Earths
Wrongly wired connector at headlight
Dodgy earths
Plus, bad connection on fuse to rear lights (On the bulkhead under the bonnet)
And dodgy earths.
Whichever way, don't bother taking it back to your usual bloke - it's very unlikely to have been the headlight in the first place. Find someone who knows how to use a multimeter.

get him to remove the blue with a white tracer, blue with a red tracer and red wires for the o/s headlamp and test using the multimeter if there is voltage on the wires that are connected to the main wiring loom ( goes up the d/s inner wing under the bonnet lip...
