Ok, just took my crank to the machine shop for polishing, now it's time to tackle the gearbox. I have read Guessworks excellent guide to assembling a gearbox (http://www.theminifo...?showtopic=9808), but does anyone know of the whereabouts of a guide to stripping the thing in the first place? Or could they post here with basic instructions? I notice that this is one area where the trusty Haynes manual cops out.

Thanks!

It wouldn't take too long to write one.... but not now...

actually come to think of it, would probably take me longer to write it than strip a gearbox....

Here's my guide:

1. Fudge up gearbox trying to lock gears.
2. Jump in other Mini and drive to Rugby.
3. Let John do it.
4. Done.

I think there's a gearbox stripdown and rebuild in the older light blue Haynes manual. Also Mini World or Mini Magazine recently did a guide on this too.

Just read guessworks guide backwards :D.

The pale blue haynes (one before the latest version) explains the stripdown and rebuild of the gearbox.

Buy an old Haynes second hand or from an antique book seller or auto jumble. They are a lot better than the new books and include a section on the gearbox.

This helped me a huge amount. It also goes into the engine rebuild too so is not just a one off help.

Iknow, I know... shameless advertising of my own product... but since it is possibly the most complete series of stripping/re-building gearboxes, what to look for re damage/wear, how they work and how to identify what is in them.... www.calverst.com, Mini Expert Issue 1 CD should help you out considerably.
